The best 4 days in National Hunt racing starts tomorrow, anyone from here going this year?

I'm at the Wednesday and Thursday and I don't think I'll be getting much work done tomorrow afternoon either.

So, who's going and what are your best bets?

My bet is it'll be fking busy as usual with people pissing in the street & it'll rain. Also there'll be your token Irishman who's lost everything begging for a ticket back to Ireland outside M&S.

Damned thing has forced me to work from the London office this week as I couldn't get a hotel near Gloucester for any amount I could afford. frown

Been a couple of times but I (along with a number of friends/colleagues) are giving it a miss due to costs.

Will be staying at home and watching on TV ....

Getting back to Cheltenhamshire after visiting clients is a nightmare this week, as it always is in Gold Cup week, so I don't bother scheduling any work. Police are drafted in from all over the place, roads are made one-way or closed at whim, and the polite (well, there can be a first time) ossifers don't have a clue what the diversions are, if they exist at all, and object to being asked. Living within a horse's nosebag of Prestbury Park but not being a fan of National Hunt Racing means it's a great week to spend somewhere else - but tens of thousands of Guinness swilling punters and loads of horsey types make it a grand week for the local economy, so carry on steeplechasing but I'm off this evening.

I have to be in Cheltenham for 9am on Wednesday... I normally leave Birmingham at 7.30 and just about get there for 9 - is there likely to be lots more traffic that early in the morning?

hehe

Do you usually leave the M5 at J10? The very best of luck thumbup

One advantage of crawling along after getting past the exit slip will be plenty of time to study the relatively new Spyker, Koenigsegg and Zagato dealer opposite Cotswold BMW. There might even be staff in it this week, there's been a sign on the door inviting potential punters across the dual carriageway to the Bentley dealership (Broughtons, former TVR) which owns the place. Nice machinery will be parked outside there on the grass verge too, if the past is anything to go by.

Sometimes I take J10, sometimes J11. I may decide against going on Wednesday then...

I hadn't noticed the new dealership opposite BMW - I will have a look later on as I'm heading to Chelt later today too.

Traffic is always mental but as the town is small it doesn't take that long to get places, you just need to know the backroads as all the non-locals stick to the sign posted horsey route.

The Bentley dealer has a Pagani Zonda in Silver & black, a couple of Spykers, a Koeniggsegg, Fezza's & Lambo + all the Astons & Bentley's you can shake a sick at.

I will be watching at home with a mate who used to be a jockey. She has three chasers to look after but they are all a bit young and have only run in bumpers

My daughter was born at Cheltenham maternity this morning, not looking forward to battling the traffic over the next few days, not visiting is not an option!

Willie Mullins to win the first and last races today.

Cousin Vinny in the opener and Quevega in the last.

If Cousin Vinny wins then I'll also have a few quid on Wichita Lineman in the 2:40.

well, mine didn;t show either, neither 1st or 2nd were on my radar.

20 runners it is a lottery I suppose at times - there are only a few real bankers I reckon, Binocular, Twist Magic, Kasbah Bliss and L'ami.

but again they're not machines and anything can happen.

Kauto Star was 3-1 on the exchanges last night, has to be worth a few quid.
I'm already well invested in Kauto Star. I never bet ante post, but I couldn't resist the prices on KS a while ago.

Vinny very disappointing but there's plenty of time to get it back. I saw Binocular riding work at Kempton recently and he didn't look that great to my untrained eyes but the trainer sounds happy enough with him. Still undecided about backing him.

I'm looking forward to the stories that always seem to do the rounds after the Races.

Some of the more typical ones:

A man won so much money that he couldn't fit it all in his pockets and got robbed of it all when passed out drunk. Another variation is he kept the money in a carrier bag that got lost/stolen.

Someone put on a £500,000 bet and lost the lot.

Someone with £20 multiplier wins several hundered grand.

Well done Satch. I've now backed Binocular, hope my money doesn't weigh it down too much!
