A good friend of mine is a Geordie who follows Newcastle United. Like two little school boys, he and I wind each other up - he about us (Liverpool) supposedly having thrown away our title chances, and I about them now being relegation fodder.

A few years ago there was an article which stated that NUFC were 'everybody's 2nd team', but I'm not sure that's the case any more. Almost everybody I speak to hopes they go down this season, so I'd like to see if this is indeed true.

So, would you like to see Newcastle United FC be relegated from The Premier League this season?

would rather see the poorer teams (in terms of play, not wealth) be relegated to keep up the standard of football in the EPL regardless of who they are

yes

If you're not good enough don't deserve to be there. Which is why we're in league 1 not the premiership mad

I dont understand this 'everybody's favourite second team' thing, i dislike every other club except my own, especially the other London clubs if Newcastle get relegated it'll serve em right.

Same with my club Spurs IF they go down, its no ones fault but there own. For what its worth i think Boro, WBA and Blackburn will go down

Blackburn will be ok, Portsmouth could definitely be among the bottom 3 though!

So a 60:40 split in favour of 'Yes' after 25 votes.

Seems about right...

I'm with Mickk on this one. I want everyone else to lose, always.

Newcastle are a once great institution - albeit one that was never as great as Geordies would have us believe - that has become a laughing stock. This happened well before the current owner took over.

The club's inept flailing and the simplistic moaning of its fans have given the rest of us hours of fun. If they do go down, the rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth will be heard throughout the land. But the rest of us will be rolling in the aisles.

No one in London has Newcastle as their 'second club', infact, no one in London considers Newcastle and its problems for more than a nano-second.

Er, Blib. You do realise you've contradicted yourself massively in those last two paragraphs?

I don't think so. Maybe it's just that I'm not expressing myself clearly enough.

Personally, I'm not the slightest bit concerned if Newcastle United get relegated.

However, I do enjoy the shenanigans at the club.

So, as a footballing club, they are of no consequence to me, but as a form of maccabre entertainment NUFC are of some passing interest.

i think this is the point, there are worse teams in the league that newcastle. whilst they have their destiny in their hands, teams like stoke and wba are reliant on newcastle dropping points.

stoke, wba and boro are probably favourites for the drop... hull will fall in to hte mixer soon but i can see teams like spurs and newcastle doing enough to pick up a draw where stoke et al will fail to pick up a point at all.

i like newcastle fans, despite their blind optimism and belief that 50K fans through the door entitles them to big club status, they know their football a lot more than many other clubs.

Wouldn't bother me if they went down - then we may see some common sense applied to wage structures and the like ... they are the next Leeds waiting fo happen.

I used to quite like Joe Kinnear - but then he disappeared when ill and was last sen coming out fo retirement on £35k a week (and who wouldn't) to try and keep this ailing team up - then he moans and berates journalists at a press conference. The man has proved himself a complete dick. So while he is at the helm their demise wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

As a toon fan, i really hope we dont, however, i can see it happening. Maybe not this year, maybe not the year after, but it will happen at some point! As to the shenanigans at the club, yes sadly they are amusing and i fear only a sign of things to come. Anyway, on a brighter note, at least im still alive and(thank god) not a mackem!

With Cardiff on their way up, Newcastle have to come down to maintain the equilibrium of bird-related teams in the premiership. That's my theory anyway...
