Because Serena Williams is not helping the cause. How on earth can it be justified when, not for the first time, a match ends so quickly and the men play 5 sets for over 5 hours? It is akin to me asking for 12months salary for doing 3 months work and actually believing I could get away with it.

Many people say the men are all power and serving, yet I have not been so entertained watching a tennis match for as long as I can remember during the Nadal semi-final. I get bored watching the women now in the same way people said they were bored watching the men a few years ago.

So you believe that a sports person's worth is based on how long they play for? Therefore a cricketer is worth vastly more than a rugby player and a marathon runner is worth vastly more than a sprinter?

No, not at all. The length of time they play relative to other sports is not the point, the point is relative to the amount of time the men play tennis and why women want equal prizes.

If they play for 2/3rds of the length a bloke does, then they should get 2/3rds of the pay... Simple as.

So what about my analogy of the marathon runner and the sprinter? Same sport but one runs for much longer than the other. Or to simplify it even further, a 100m sprinter and a 400m sprinter. The latter should get paid 4 times as much?

It's a different sport.... Your analogy is worthless...

You're still not explaining why a 400m sprinter shouldn't get paid 4 times as much as a 100m sprinter. What is the reason, other than 'it's a different sport'? I really can't see why the difference between those two disciplines is so much more than the difference between playing 3 sets of tennis and 5 sets of tennis.

Well if you won't explain your opinions I'm not going to see it am I? From here it seems you actually don't know but just don't want to say it.

I've explained it... You just aren't interested in listening. 100m and 400 metres are different disciplines, Playing 3 sets, and 5 sets isn't...

Is tennis the only sport in which playing for longer means you ought to be paid more or are there others? 50 overs cricket worth 150% more than 20 overs cricket? smile

Well how about a 100m runner that runs the race in 20s versus one that runs it in 10s?
wink

I think its also about the competition element which results in enjoyment (where was the competition in the womens?).

What I am witnessing is two athletes so talented that they are almost in-human in their skill. The effort both psycholigical and physical (especially Nadel after his marathon in the semi) is so far removed from what I saw in the womens final, as to be almost a different sport.

If women want equal pay in tennis then they should play over 5 sets, simple as that.

But women don't do equality do they?

I don't agree that women should be on equal pay for playing best of 3 sets.

Let's say all your female work colleagues and you were all on the same wages, they can bunk off work early at 3pm everyday and only require to
work a 3 day week and you have to slog your guts till 5pm Monday to Friday. See how you would like it.

I don't think so.

Well, having watched both finals in Melbourne on the telly, I think I know who I would be offering more prize money to...
And I'd be interested to know if the tickets were the same price. I would not be happy to see just 14 games of tennis for the A$100 or whatever it costs.
Can't believe the woman Serena was playing was No3 in the world!
