What is it in the football world that the interviewee cannot just give a straight - sometimes honest - answer?

For example, Arsene Wenger seems especially disciplined in not answering the question.

"It's just been confirmed that Arshavin has been granted a work permit"

AW - "We haven't applied for one"

Why not say either, "we are moving closer to signing him" or "we've called off negotiations" ??

But even players, take England players under Umbrella Man Mclaren; "are you frustrated with the current formation?"

Gerrard didn't exactly say, "fk me, not arf" or "they shoulda gone for Redknapp before the press came knocking at his door". Instead, he gave some flannel about how they're all learning from him and that he's a good manager.

Why not shrug his shoulders with a grin and say something honest?

A little unfair. From what I've seen, Adams has been very unlucky so far. Needs a good stint in the role before getting fired off in the traditional premiership manner.

In answer to the original question - the managers and players are paid to do the interviews as part of the TV contracts. In short, they can't be arsed and just go through the motions with stock answers and no expression on their face. You never hear a player boast of how good his goal was, just that he's 'pleased for the team'. Standard, stock (and I supposr professional) answers but boring as fk.

Few characters left in the game. O'Neil, Harry, Strachan and Fergie spring to mind. But that's about it.

True, i know a few Pompey fans and they seem to be split on this one.

It's odd. Just the other day (the day of the Villa evening match) I was readily sgging Adams off just based on results. However, I watched the game that evening and Portsmouth outplayed Villa for good parts of the game. My own conclusion was that he was being unlucky and the commentators seemed to agree and said the same pattern had followed previous games.

Time will tell, I suppose.
