Hi, a few of my friends and I are taking part in the bike ride this summer, I have done it once before with very little training but managed to finish. I would say that I am reasonably fit but was hoping if anyone has any good tip for what sort of training with/without the bike or how many miles, what speed and how often.

Thanks in advance

Rod.

havent done it but have heard that there are a couple of big hills, or not so much big but long inclines, near the end of the route so its worth doing some cadence/interval training so you legs get used to a change in the resistance.

a friend did it last year and said that simply time in the saddle was the best training, there are a lot of people doing it and its surprising ow you get swept along by others (the peleton effect i guess), depends if you want to set a good time or just enjoy the atmosphere really, if its the latter, you should probably be ok just getting the miles in on a gym machine and then loading up on energy bars and such like on the day. at a guess if you are doing 2 x 50 miles sessions a week and 2 x 30 mins streching sessions you should be fine.
if its the former however...... no idea. smile

Its easier than you think, you spend alot of time in traffic or in the nice pubs along the way.

just make sure you have a comfy saddle!!

Its not too bad actually and theres no point trying to set a good time because of theres so many people doing it you get held up a lot.

Best of doing a bit of work in the gym and then some decent miles on the bike a couple of months before but make sure you do a area with a few hills because the last big hill is a killer

It's not too bad, Ditchling Beacon at the end is your only major hill. It's quite a climb made worse by other people giving up right in front of you, thus loosing your momentum.
Otherwise the route is quite nice it feels mainly downhill!
Best thing is to leave early before all the people who have got their bike out of the shed for the first time in 10 years, the night before!

In terms of training - go for a ride twice a week each aound 15kms, then just extend it as you get fitter.

Remember everyone will get a lift back with their bikes meaning horrifc traffic congestion on the day. We normally park up a few miles along the coast the night before and then meet up with the car afer the event.
