Just watching Villa v West Brom on Sky. A typical 'Derby Match', Liverpool & Everton, United v City, etc.

Now, my question is: why are they called 'Derby' matches, or Derbies?

No, because I don't know the answer. I clicked the thread hoping it might have lead to some (semi) interesting discussion about it. But if everytime someone asks a question on here, that smartarse reply is given, this place will get dull pretty quickly.

I think you'll find the top result gives all the information the OP requires.

So if you were genuinely trying to be helpfull and not just being a smartarse, why bother with that obfuscated link. Why not just post a link directly to the real google search results, or even better, the wikipedia article thats the first hit.

Totally agree with the "Letmegooglethatforyou" st tht's always posted on here.

Has no-one considered that an actual discussion, given that this is a "discussion forum" is better than everyone just sat at home Googling things they want to know.

Maybe (in this case) the OP thought someone here might have theories on the subject other than the stuff that's on Wiki.
Anecdotal evidence, etc. is usually better than Google "facts".

Anyone for the record, I was always led to believe it was to do with the Royal Shrovetide football match that's held in Ashbourne every year.

My thoughts exactly, ND!!

Yes I could have googled or wikki'd it, and found the answer, but after all, as ND has pointed out, it is a discussion forum, after all. Why has PH had this influx of posts that are unhelpful or smartarse?

totally disagree, its one thing to say "well i looked on wikipedia for a reason why maches involving geographically close football teams are called derbies and this is what it says ........ do you guys have any other ideas" but in this case, the OP might as well have said "i cant be arsed to look, tell me" which is tantamount to a kid at school saying "why should i do my homework when you are only going to tell me the answers tomorrow??"

i dont mind a discussion but bring something to the table first!

sorry i am just annoyed because Doncaster Rovers FC is run by a bunch of numpties... i was hoping some doncaster fans might be here so i could abuse them, night all!...
