Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is not getting carried away with his side's title hopes.

Benitez's side top the Barclays Premier League by a point from Chelsea and are six clear of champions Manchester United.

But the former Valencia boss does not expect the Reds' rivals to give any quarter in the race for the title.

"For us to win the league we need Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal to mess up their season," he is quoted as saying in The Sun.

"It is very rare that three teams all mess up.

"So there's no point waiting for our direct adversaries to slip up because it won't happen.

"They all have a lot greater financial means than us."

He won the league with Valencia against the vastly superior wallets of Barcelona and Real Madrid, I don't understand why it's so different for him at Liverpool this season?

I am a diehard Liverpool fan, but I dont think this current squad are good enough to win the league. As I have said on the Liverpool thread we have a great spine of a team, but we are lacking two quality full backs and two world class wingers. We also have no depth to the squad, as has been seen when Nando is out injured. We have no out and out striker and we depend on our midfielders to score. If I was running the show, I`d have Kuyt and Babel up front while Torres is out and I would have Robbie Keane put down.

I'd call myself a diehard fan too.
We've certainly got the squad to win it one season but not to dominante over a number of years like Utd & Chelsea.
Kuyt can't control anything that goes to him - give me Keane any day.

Opinions in football eh !

For die hard supporters you have missed the big clue in the statement,

"as quoted by the Sun" any true scouser won't read this crap or pay
any attention to what they write.

It has been reported on a couple of other agencies I think?

I too agree that we certainly don't have a team as good as Manu's or maybe Chelsea's. However we've currently managed to climb to the top without Torres for a large amount of time, a non-scoring Keane, Babel was out for quite some time, Gerrard hasn't exactly been playing week in week out, Agger was out for a length of time, Maschanero was out too for a few weeks. Surely if we can get a good run together, maybe Keane can find at least half his form and Torres can bag a few then we'd at least have a decent chance this season...

Its not about the side etc.

Its tin pot psychology, he's trying to talk up the opponents and put pressure on them; thats why there is all the 'they won't slip up stuff'. Pretty amateur if you ask me as he is up against the master in Ferguson.

Don't care either way as I have no real interest who wins!!!

If Benitez wants to play with two holding midfielders (Alonso,Mascherano) and run the 4-2-3-1 system with three attaching midfielders they need to perform much better(or we should buy better wingers simply) as their contribution has not been great this season whereas we were pretty good at it during a spell before and goals were just keep coming from everywhere.

I'd be interested in knowing which games Benitez is planning to lose, or more to the point draw.

As a die-hard arsenal fan I have to say that all four of the supposed big four clubs are doing their level best to not win the title at the moment, but as previous season have proved it isn't until about Feb that the title race starts to get serious. Up until then it is just a case of putting yourself in a position to win it.
My current feeling is that none of the "big four" are playing particularly well and I think this year will see the lowest winning total points for quite some time.

Belief is the key to Liverpool winning the title and if they believe deep down that they are good enough then I think they have a good a chance as any of the current top five clubs......of course Sunday's result could have a massive effect on that belief!

Arsenal need to beat Liverpool and Aston Villa in their next two games and then start a long winning streak to have a chance of the title.....having watched them play at 'Boro on Saturday they are a million miles away from winning the title this year.
