biggrin

He's still retained his SOH even though he's away with the fairies these days.

After Smokin' Joe surely?

Ali was a showman that used a lot of psyche to unsettle his opponents, which worked most of the time wink

Had Joe's corner not thrown in the towel at the end of the 14th in Manilla he would have probably won despite being virtually blind. Ali was begging his corner to throw the towel, but they waited, seeing Frazier's corner were concerned about something. Had Joe stood up ready for the next round chances are ali's corner would have thrown the towel. But we'll never ever know.....

Joe was good but he didn't have the charisma of Ali. As a kid at the time, I remember Ali had this fantastic pulling power where upon the whole world wanted to know when he was boxing next, he was a superman to most kids of that era. When he boxed it was like a big event and was one of a few times I was allowed to stay up late, so I could watch the great man.

Did you watch the programme about the Thriller in Manilla?? Some of what went on there was out of order from Ali and he knew it!

As for fights, the two that stay in my mind are Hagler v Hearns, short but brutal and Benn v McClellan - again for the wrong reasons really but utterly brutal, the first round when Benn gets punched out of the ring is incredible, how he got passed that round is a mystery. Such a pity about what followed...

That Benn fight was incredible. I was sure he was going to get done in about two rounds - somehow, somehow, don't ask me how though, he got through it and the tide gradually turned.

McLellan had a hell of a punch on him, and so how Benn, who while he had a solid jaw, did ship a few, got through it, I don't know.

Brutal ending though for the G-Man ...

Massive fight, I remember it well - I did my English GSCE talk on that very fight (was a good excuse to bring a video in to watch smile)

Sad what happened though, seem to remember a documentary showing him fairly recently, sad viewing.

Great fight - but its pretty un-PC nowadays to even talk about the action in the fight because of the dire outcome. But yes - probably one of the greatest British victories in the ring I've ever seen considering how nobody thought that he would survive a 2nd round after the beating in the 1st.

Ali was a boxing god and whilst Old 'Smokin' Joe was the Lex Luthor to his Superman, Ali was always a cut above.

The absolute battering Frazier got from Foreman somewhat diminished Joe's legacy. Frazier was literally lifted off his feet by one of Foremans shots and went down about 6 times before being stopped IIRC
