Cristiano Ronaldo crowned European Footballer of the year
Discussion
Well as in the title good ol Ronaldo has won the award.
Cutting to the chase, there is no doubt he's a supremely talented footballer and has some great success but he also is a cheating toerag IMO who likes to dive to try and win posession etc with his diving prowess..
Since he's a role model for kids etc i think it sets a bad example giving him the award.
What does the Pistonhead Jury recon?

Tit of the year award would be more apt. But it'd be touch between him and Rooney - that ape cant even string a sentence together.
Who cares? He is a footballer. And he may dive every now and again. but you will find it gets the st kicked out of him every game by every other wannabe out there. He takes some knocks. Hugely fit player, and very talented.
There are more than one that dive every now and again, its the way the game is now.

He is a bloody good footballer. You say he's a cheat for diving etc but that's part of the strategy of the game, everyone does it. Play for goal, if that fails play for a free kick near their goal.
Part of the strategy of the game? Doesn't that say more (negetive) about modern football than anything else?No doubt about his skill but these guys are paid fortunes and cheating shouldn't be promoted on any level..

And that's the reason why I'm starting to move away from football, they spend too much time rolling round on the floor.Ronaldo might have more competition for the award next year if Kaka moves to Man City, it would be brilliant if he were to play in the Premiership!

My local ceramic tiler guy coaches a local kids team of 7 year olds, including his twin sons. He left a job here early one day to go to a special training session where they were teaching them the "Ronaldo dive" in the box to get enalties..........WTF. When challenged on it, he replied they had had two teams doing it on them last season and lost key games as a result......
I said I thought the better training session should be to teach the kids the merits of fair play and that if you are "beaten by a cheat", the answer is not to cheat back. He replied "yeah right".
Strangely enough, same guy never actually finished my tiling job properly, (missed some grouting out in one area and missed an infill out completely too), but stil required paying (in cash) and laughed at me when I suggested he comlete the work fully, assuring m he would call in on his way past to do these small things....that's two years ago in Sept!
Hmmm, sounds like he was the ideal teacher for the cheat lesson and his "yeah right" comment makes more sense now!

He, like most footballers, does indeed stretch the rules of fair play etc.
But I would argue he's not to blame entirely. He's a young boy who's entire life has been one of plenty. He in essence is spoilt. Point the blame finger at the authorities that have failed to lay down the law and have mollycoddled these players from a very early age. Until the FA can get the players to show the same level of respect that the rugby players show referees, then nothing will change.
Football, run by brats, played by brats.
.. and if you want to take this train of thought higher - look to nanny-state government. Respect for our betters is at an all time low.

Maybe all the blame doesn't sit at the players feet but cheating is still bleedin cheating and giving those that do an award makes them part of the problem rather than part of the cure..
And good point about Rugby. I'm not saying it's perfect but by and large if people can respect the rules (and the refs) in Rugby why can't they in football?

Best player there is right now so good award.
As to cheating - well are there actually any good players out there that don't cheat? Any?
Some would say if you cheat you are automatically not a good player! As to cheating - well are there actually any good players out there that don't cheat? Any?
But whilst people continue to accept it as "part of the sport" it will never get stamped out.
If, however, Ronaldo and co were banned for 3 seasons if they get caught "cheating" I think it would quite soon be irradicated!
It doesn't help when pundits, press, managers and fans applaud and promote the view that because a player was 'touched' it is legitimate to try and score a perfect 10 for the ensuing dive.
As in 'Well, the defender can't argue there he touched the guy and he went over'
When the hell did that become the norm? I don't, and never will, get that as a reason for the dives.
Anyone caught doing this on video should get an instant 3 match ban, second offence 6 months, third ban from that competition.
I don't advocate going back to when players came off with bits missing, but it is, in the end a mans game (apart from when women play, but they still take lumps out from what I have seen).

Question is, what will you be saying about him, when (not if) he leaves to go to play in Spain, because although he has a four year contract with the club, Real Madrid have offered him £300,000 a week, more than twice his current salary?

And to throw another turkey in the fire (adding a Christmas touch to it. ), since he is a role-model to the kids, do you wan't you're kids growing up thinking that's the right way?As to cheating - well are there actually any good players out there that don't cheat? Any?
Don't like him at all but respect his footballing alilities he is the best player in the world but i do wish that he would cut out the diving that he really doesn't need to do.
I know other players do it and it is going to get highlighted when he does it because of the bad press ala Drogba (I'm a Chelsea fan btw) neither of them have any reason to dive, They are both good players!
