From that I gauge that Liverpool are far the most successful. they've got to the final far more than others.

Er, I don't think you've understood the table there.
They have a better success rate in the competitions used for the sample. Not the same thing.

No they don't, you're mis-interpreting the "stats".

They have a better final success rate, let's compare how many times they a) got INTO the competition and b) the times they didn't get all the way to the final.

what might be slightly more interesting is how many european games (not just the final) the teams have played over the years and how many games won/lost.
