In the aftermath of Lewis Hamilton's last lap pass of Timo Glock to clinch the F1 drivers' title, I got thinking about other sporting moments that produced those dramatic moments that keep us watching sport.

I no particular order my most memorable ones were...

Jonny Wilkinson's drop-goal to win the 2003 Rugby World cup final.

Man Utd's two late goals to win the 1999 Champion's League final.

Michael Thomas scoring for Arsenal to snatch the league title from Liverpool by the narrowest of margins.

England's cricketers taking the last Australian wicket with only 3 runs needed for victory in the 2005 Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

Steve Redgrave winning his 5th gold at the Sydney Olympics.

The last over of the 1999 Cricket World Cup semi-final between Australia and South Africa where Klusener seemed to have done enough to win the game for SA but Australia completed a run-out to win it.

Not sure why, but Kriss Akabusi clinching gold for GB at the World Athletics Championships in the 4x400 sticks in my mind too.

There must be loads of others, what are your most memorable ones?

Akabusi was (on paper) much slower than the guy he beat in that race to get the gold, cracking run.

Some of the last lap sprints by Bekele in 5000m and 10000m races have been astonishing. Lap after lap of Kenyans sharing and pushing the pace, trying to tire Bekele, trying to run his finish out of him, they hit the bell, kick hard down the back straight, round the final bend, amazingly Bekele is stretching away, clear down the home straight, arms aloft across the line in celebration! Sport at its best. clap

I thought he only scored 3 of 'em?

I didn't make it clear but I was kinda thinking of the ones I witnessed (too young for '66) and also where the result was in doubt right until the final whistle/finishing line. Not saying that it wasn't dramatic, but there weren't late goals that turned the game around like the other matches I mentioned.

When I said 'Englishman' I was talking in the plural (including Peters).

I was too young for 66 (just) but lets be honest we've all seen the re-runs. The match actually WAS in doubt right up until that last goal. England hadn't had a kick after the 3rd goal and the Germans had already scored once in stoppage time on 90+ minutes and were looking capable of doing so again until that break up the field by Hurst.

Heady days afterwards I'll wager - will we ever see their like again?

More recently - Beckham free kick against Greece.

Owen's goal against Argentina.

Perhaps not so glorious with respect to acheivement (ie not winning a tournament) but with respect to a 'great moment' certainly up there.

Think one of my favourite ones is the barry sheene v kenny roberts 1979 british motorbike gp. These two went at it hammer and tongs for most of the race, until,iirc,2 laps from the end when sheene got baulked by a backmarker, and roberts was away.

Goran Ivanisevic winning Wimbledon. Past it, had lost six finals before i think.

Got a wild card into the event and it was just unbelievable to watch the Final against Rafter.

Was that the race where at one point when Sheene overtook Roberts he flicked him a V-sign?

I seem to remember the commentator saying "and Sheene is waving at Roberts..."

Good one. There was the titanic semi-final with Henman previously as well. Rafter had a great final with Sampras too a couple of years earlier did he not?

I can't remember the final that clearly, but the year Becker won his first title was a great 'gathering momentum' sporting achievement.

Murray, of course! I can hear him saying it now.

Not sure punches in the paddock count as great sporting moments!

Not even close, carter took a swing out on the course. He was on the jj cobas at the time, he fell off, and as he was straightening the clutch lever, a sector marshall decided he wasnt going to let him go, carter got arsey and swung at the guy. Was, either 85 or 86, it chucked it down, hence why he fell off! Got featured on one of the havoc videos, either 9 or 10 iircpunchsmile

As a Red Stevie's goal against WHU in the FA Cup and of course to come back from the dead with an average team in 2005 Champs League...

Whatever the event it needs to be witnessed live I feel to get the impact, so I dont get the 1966 world cup but I'm sure it was incredible to witness..

Plus one on the 2005 Edgebaston test as well....
