My mate had a couple of spares to the Arsenal Newcastle match at the weekend so he and I went along.

Couldn't believe how sterile the atmosphere was, we were openly discussing our own teams (Manu and Liverpool) and yet nobody raised an eyebrow.

The chants were very few and far between and pretty unoriginal. Come on, you can do better then 'theo theo, theo theo...' It seemed to be almost like a family day out, which imo has it's time and place but not neccessarily on the football pitch.

Granted Newcastle played ste but I doubt this was in any way down to a 'daunting' atmosphere in the stadium. Arsenal play some beautiful football but I see that the support hasn't changed much from the days when Highbury was referred to as the Library.

Can't wait to get upto Anfield in a couple of weeks and be in the Kop again!

I think this is indicative of the football at the top level. I tend to go and watch my local non league side these days, the atmosphere is always good, the football played is of a decent standard and the players show a geniune passion for playing the game.

Problem is the Kop spoils you when you go to other grounds. Not much out there in the world that is better.

Things do get a bit lively during the A Category fixtures. Having said that, we are still poor performers, aka the Highbury Library.

Probably too posh and sophisticated....

I've been to Anfield on 3 occassions before the seating went in and although 'atmospheric' it is also terribly overrated.

Frankly West Ham's ground (pre-facelift) on a cup-night was every bit as daunting - as are others on important nights - Roker park etc.

IMHO

Spot on IM, Kop is massively overrated, and a little known fact is that there are microphones deliberately placed on the Kop for TV games, so that the fans sound louder on tv.

Spurs, and West Ham both have a much louder atmosphere

Honestly not, they put the microphones in the actual roof of the Kop to make it sound much louder on TV, to perpetuate the myth of the Kop being loud and that most cringeworthy of all songs YNWA that they stole from us 50 year ago

yikes

They stole that from you!!!

Do you have a linky for that particular revelation?

The song is also sung at football clubs around the world, where it is performed by a massed chorus of supporters on matchday; this tradition began at Liverpool F.C. in the early 1960s and later spread to several other clubs.
Indeed, Celtic fans are the ones claiming they sang it first:

It was sang at OT after the Munich Crash, there is a video of us singing it on Youtube somewhere, have a look!

So what about when you are actually there? Has each seat got a little speaker behind it to make it appear louder than it actually is?

Clearly a half-wit gave you a piece of his mind, and you held on to it.

been to anfield 4 times, wasnt impressed on any of the occassions atmosphere wise. Was even at the cup game when you won 1-0 when you fans through their own st at us from above and when your fans attacked the ambulance that Alan Smith was in injured.

I was at that match too, I recall the vast majority applauding Alan Smith as he was stretchered off. Because what happened to the ambulance would in no way happen in Manchester etc...

It is pointless arguing with a blinkered moron like you, you claim that it is banter but it is not when you come out with stuff like "microphones in the stands" etc.

They honestly put microphones in the stands for the big games to make you sound louder on TV. They dont make you soun louder if you are actually there its just for the "benefit" of TV audiences

What absolute rubbish. Why not just turn up the sound layer of the fans relative to the other layers of sound. This would also make them sound louder on tv and be a lot less hassle.
