Indian Football Players
Discussion
Not good enough, or not interested?
There seems to be plenty of interest, but no players at the higher end of professional football. Must confess, haven't done much research into it, but Harpal Singh (Leeds) comes to mind and isn't Chopra an Indian name?
The only 'top end' Indian player (in competition terms) I've seen is Vikash Dhorasoo for France (does even play still?)
It just seems a bit odd that there good representations for Afro and Afro-Carribean, but no Indian / Pakistani, esp seeing they love their Sunday leagues / Power Football etc.
Any views?

They're like black swimmers, very scarce for some reason.
There was a thread a while back and blacks are not buyount (spelt wrong haha), so blacks cannot float.indians have no stamina makes sense too, I work with loads , they have to have a ten minute break every 15 minutes, answering the phone wears them out.

It is odd. Not that I played at any great standard, but the best player I ever played with was of Indian descent. He was quick, good with both feet and scored loads of goals from midfield. He played at Luton until he was 17 or 18 but they thought he was too slight to make it as a pro.
May not be so much the case now, but I would guess that older Indians who have settled in the UK probably don't view football (or any sport) as a suitable career path.
Not sure about that stamina theory, but my mate Ash is a lazy so-and-so.

The american olympic 4X100m team had a black guy.I've noticed a lot of Indian and Asian males play Hockey well and that's a fairly tough game, so their stamina can't be in question.
Nothing to do with stamina, much more to do with culture.
Indian kids just don't get the same encouragement to try and get into footie and pursue it if they are good. Watch the film 'Bend it like Beckham', granted some parts of it are over the top but in general it is a remarkably good view of what indian families and parents are like.
Sport is fine, my parents don't mind me going to watch football and when I was younger often gave me lifts to martial arts and indeed funded it. However they wouldn't have been so good about it if it impacted on my studies or I wanted to do something like become a pro.

H Kan,
You've probably hit the mail on the head with the Culture aspect, although I did see a programme some months back where the Asian community, I think in Bradford ?, had obtained grants for a football club to uprade pitches for the benefit of local youngsters. Hopefully we'll discover more talent and see some benefits of such schemes.

Oh and the other thing is that I find generally Indians are less built and shorter then both white and black people. This seemingly is the case with most asians and as a result this does hinder breaking into football where many fail at youth and reserve levels for being too slight.
Although this may be down to upbringing rather then genetics as asians living here seem to be the same size. May have been because in the old days in India etc food wasn't as plentiful as it is now.

More than a few (meat eating) North Indians are +6ft and thick-set. Although this may be down to upbringing rather then genetics as asians living here seem to be the same size. May have been because in the old days in India etc food wasn't as plentiful as it is now.

I don't dispute that mate. I could introduce you to some heavily built indians, both who eat meat and are vegetarian- I'm one of them. Unfortunately I was gifted with sod all footie ability so that ruled me out!But seriously watch any documentary on India and the people are certainly smaller in stature. I've been and it has struck me every time. It's not so noticeable in this country but the difference is still there to an extent.

Apparently it's because every time an Indian team gets a corner they build a shop on it....There seems to be plenty of interest, but no players at the higher end of professional football. when i was at uni i played in an all indian 5 a side team. we were playing all over the country and won many tornaments. also i have known of many asian guys offered contracts but could not accept them due to family pressure. daddy would rather son became a doctor / accountant / lawyer .
dont forget that until quite recently there were not many black players in profesional football. i think even until the early seventies there were very few.
there are thousands of indian teams , they have their own leagues. i have played , badly, for a few in my time.
as for the cornershop joke but i think you will find young asians do not want to get involved with anything that hard and boring
its only a matter of time until there are more. the players are out there. edited to say amongst asian ,ie indian, lads i know ,most are into football.
