Any golfers here?

I have a set of old irons that I use (and get on with) but would like to find some history on them.

Anyone know where I can find more info on them.

Basically they are Nicoll of Scotland, Brian Hugget blades.

Also, would like to "restore" them. The heads are fine but the stems/stalks have lost a lot of their "silver" coating so guess a re-paint or suchlike is in order? (or is new stalks the done thing these days?). New grips whilst I'm at it.

It's a shaft, not a stalk

I knew it began with an S! biggrin having a dumb moment when typing the original post.

Found some history on Nicoll, they ceased in 1983 so I guess my clubs are at least 25 years old.

They play well though, 2 birdies yesterday proves that biggrin

Nicol of Scotland was a small company i think started by a club professional who made clubs.....

they are ancient blades and want replacing, it makes no sense to repair them the shafts rust from the inside out and im sure they will start falling to bits soon. You are looking at £20- 25 per club to regrip/ reshaft them...

my advice would be to get some non blades and watch your scores tumble, blades are for Pros not club golfers.

Until they physically fall apart, it makes no financial sense replacing them.

I appreciate that when they do break, it's better to replace rather than fix.

5 over on my last 9 hole round, there's little left to tumble biggrin I wouldn't put the clubs I use as the faults in my game!

if you enjoy playing with those antiques you will enjoy it far more with some nice modern clubs, golf is a hard game try and make it a little easier with some decent kit!!

you could buy some nice Ping blades for less than £200 and i promise you will improve, you must have some talent to shoot 5 over with them?

Never had lessons but I've always had a "natural" swing though (according the golf coach at club I used to work at when I was young).

5 over on a 9 hole, not an 18. Previous 2 rounds were 7 and 8 over.

Thing is, at the moment I don't play regularly enough(once a week or fortnight) to justify more expenditure (have just replaced bag as old as the irons, got a new driver and shoes). However, I guess playing Hockey all the time throughout my life helps with the hand/eye co-ordination/swing etc.

I appreciate what you are saying though, once my current clubs die then a new set will be bought. Kinda attached to these clubs as I've had them 16/17 years now and get on with them.

Actually I would disagree with this - if you are playing well with your current clubs, stick with them smile I was always told not to play with blades and that they were 'only for pros' but having gone from Mizuno cavity back clubs to Nike blades and then back to Mizuno blades I definitely play better with blades - they look much nicer than the cavity back shovels behind the ball and you have a lot more control. Go with what works for you smile

S59 followed by s58, i use the s59 they are blades and i think they are awesome.

blades are for top golfers peroid.....

blades do sit behind the ball nicely but im sorry you are wrong they are far harder to hit as the sweet spot is a quarter the size of a cavity back so an occasional golfer will always be better with cavities.

tiger and ernie use blades because they are good and hit a lot of balls to stay good.

Ah the S59 "blade" not a blade at all really is it? Quote from Golf bidder says - "Geared towards lower handicappers, the Ping S59 irons are the closest thing to a pure blade that Ping have ever made".

Not a true blade in my book.

I used to play with a real blade - Hogan PC's. Still have them as well as a set of Hogan Directors. Needless to say you are right though and no way can I hit them now wink

Nike blades are the way forwards. I went from 9 to 6 first competition I player with them in. They just have that much feel and workability, I wouldn't trade them for anything else.

I use Nike Pro Combo, wedge to 8 iron are blades (helps control flight) then 7-3 are cavity back (straighter and longer) these helped my game to a great degree, before them i was using Callaway x-16's (all cavity).
nice clubs, i tried a set but not quite as good as my s59, for me anyway.

Tiger Woods said recently in an interwiew about equipment that unless he is practising everyday his blades are harder to play with than cavities, that statement kind of puts things into perspective.

You sound exactly the same as me. This year ive played twice and beat my mates who are playing every other day virtually.

I played for years with an old set of blades and never had a lesson but I could hit them well and straight (Not too far though never have been able to hit long just accurate) swapped the blades for a set of cavity backed new things and game didn't improve one bit so who cares what your playing with if it works.
