Well, after the sad demise of Michael Vaughan, who do we think should be the next man for the job ?

Bookies have the following:

Peterson 1/16
Strauss 7/1
Keys 7/1

My view is that KP is not the man for the job as he's all about himself, just dont think he'd command the respect of his teammates. Strauss would be an excellent 'captain' as he appears to have all the relevant credentials, again though as per Vaughan, his form is not exactly brilliant at the moment. As for Keys, well he has a very mediocre average at test level & doesn't make the team regularly, so not even sure why his name has been put into the equation.

I'm hoping that Cook gets the nod (with a strong vice captain) as england need to look into the future & he is clearly going to be a part of it for a long time to come. Failing that Freddy (if he'd want it).

I personally also hope Vaughan does return to form at county level & get another shot for england as the man is clearly hugely talented. He went up hugely in my opinion by the way he has dealt with the media/situation over the last day or so & it makes a refreshing change for someone to be the way he was about the whole thing.

My vote goes to Strauss... for the 4th test only. I see what you're saying with Cook but I don't view the 4th test as the start of a long term position, more of a one-off test. A captaincy decision today based on a resignation yesterday is not the way forward for the long term imo. I don't think Cook has any captaincy experience and neither has KP.

I personally would not give KP the captaincy at all. I'd rather keep him how he is, unburdened with responsibility, to keep making those runs we need.

Interesting that Vaughan has made himself unavailable for selection for the 4th test - that gives an opportunity for the selectors to pick another number 3 or 4 - the big question has to be will they pick Key? He would be my long term option for Captain as he has got plenty of experience with Kent at all levels of the game from 20/20 through to the longer form of the game. Ideal solution seeing as Colly has resigned the one day captaincy as well.

My XI:

Cook
Strauss (VC)
Key (C)
KP
Bell
Flintoff
Foster
Broad
Sidebottom
Anderson
Monty

With people like Shah, Bopara, Jones and Hoggard waiting in the wings dependant on the pitch.

He's got it ...

Is he a deep thinker about the psychology of the game, has he the technical nous on the field, the ability to change direction in an instant, to apply pressure at certain times, to be a hard man on the field and slightly aloof from the players?

Or is just KP - everyone's mate?

I sense the latter.

At least he'll make Ponting look more like a gnome ...

The jury is out.

Oh, and can be not now bugger off to IPL for loadsa dosh? Is that what got him the job? The idea that the ECB didn't want him to do that - so they've 'bought him off' ... ?

is he Tony Greig in disguise? hehe

KP appears to have been selected by means of eliminating everyone else who is capable of getting in the team. Not that this is his fault in any way, but I'm not convinced he's captain material.

It's Bopara in for Vaughan for the 4th test.

He's back rolleyes

Jardine had your number mate! biggrin

" It is recorded that during one tour match Australian player Hunter Hendry expressed his sympathies to Jardine for the jeers the crowd was giving him, and Jardine responded, "All Australians are uneducated, and an unruly mob."

Later, at the second Test in Sydney where the crowd was again hurling abuse at Jardine, fellow English cricketer Patsy Hendren observed that "They don't seem to like you very much over here, Mr Jardine." Jardine replied, "The feeling is fking mutual".

Good lad!

Dream on my good man... I can't deny you that.
Boring winter down here; I'm up in Brisbane today - it hit 23 and I nearly thought about taking off my coat. Nothing but Rugby on the go down here for now; sheep shaggers burst our re-inflated RU bubble so even that's gone a tad quiet for now - we may well join you on the end of a saff drubbing pretty soon as the Wallabies are about to head down there

Enjoy the rest of yr Monday.. mines done; off to bed.

Pieterson isn't English, I have never understood why he plays for them.

Because he got annoyed with the SA quota system and invoked some English (grand)parental heritage.

I agree to an extent as he is a more natural replacement for Vaughan, but Shah (by his standards) isn't having the best of seasons in the Championship (despite playing in Division 2 and plenty of games at batsman-friendly Lord's) so maybe that has counted against him. Bopara is more of a like-for-like replacement were one required for Collingwood IMO, but has scored plenty of runs in the Championship this season (likewise in Division 2).
