Who is / was the greatest?

Can anyone still be 'great' if they're consistently unsuccessful in big competitions and/or fail to win trophies?

Brian Clough "I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one."

RIP.

Shankley for building the foundation, Paisley for the building the house and Rafa to finish off the gardenwink

Liverpool Fc turning the corner for 19 years! I do have to admire you scousers for optimism.

Houillier was a better manager than the fata Peter Kay lookalike, all that money he has spent and you are still light years away from winning the league.

Best Manager was Sir Matt followed by Sir Alex

Hmmm, I can see where this thread is going hehe

Fergie, Clough, Shanks and Paisley have to be the main contenders. Was Busby that good? Did he have a good record as manager? Genuine question.

Hiddink seems pretty good to me as well. Making teams greater than the sum of their parts is what differentiates a good from a great manager.

Busby built two great sides, and produced legendary footballers. Survived the Munich air crash and rebuilt another team, tht first English club to win the European Cup, and if it hadnt have been for Munich, United would surely have dominated the European Cup for years like Madrid did.

It was Busby who pioneered playing in Europe, the English FA didnt want them to go, yet Busby insisted that United went.

its got to be fergie, beating the old firm in the league and winning 2 european trophies with what is basically a little provincial team in Aberdeen before going on to dominate english football for 20 years.

Trappattoni deserves a mention too.

True, but Cloughie did the same south of the border with Forest, albeit he didn't go on to one of the "sexy money" clubs to further demonstrate his skills.

Cloughie would still get my vote, but then being born and bred in Nottingham and growing up when Forest / Cloughie were in their prime then I am bound to be biased. Fergie definitely up there though as he has maintained such a high standard for so long....probably hard to beat him really.

I think its more the younger players who do this. Never happened when there were enough experienced players in the side . . Petit, Vieira, Bergkamp, etc.

Guus Hiddink has to be up there imo.
Despite my Liverpool affiliation, Fergie too.

In no particular order

Cloughie - this guy knew how to get the best out players & play as team, whilst being entertaining
Bob Paisley
'wor Bobby (Robson)
Ron Greenwood
Bill Nic, also think Keith Burkinshaw a bit underated, thought the Spuds played some decent stuff while he was in charge
Sir Alf (if only for the World Cup win)
The curernt spanish manager, they play as team & are great to watch
Dario Gradi

Worst manager has to be John Sitton (Leyton Orient). Have a look on youtube at his half time team talks as part of the doc
Leyton Orient... Yours for a fiver,

Priceless!

Cloughy, He won the European cup twice with a mediocre club and got the best out of players. Should have been the England manager.
Shankly, Ferguson and Redknap should also rate amongst the best.

Oh go on then.... Claudio Ranieri...Bobby Campbell....John Hollins....getting a bit before me now.

;)

seriously though, Mourinho has to be in the top 5 of modern great managers. I would have loved to see him back at the Bridge, im sure Scolari will continue his great career there though.

no third vote for bill nic then? 1st this century to do the double, established spurs as a big club (which they are before you all start). what about bobby robson? got england to world cup semis in 90, better achievment than most england managers. oh and can i just put forward ossie ardilles for pure blind attacking faith!
