2010 - Each team must have 4 players eligable for the National side of the country the team comes from
2011 - 5 home grown players
2012 - 6 home Grown players

Think its one of the only things Blatter has come out with that i agree with 100%. Arsenal and Liverpool will be hit the most. Arsenal only had 1 Eng player (Walcott) in their final match startig 11 and Liverpool i think only had 2.
In the Champ final, Man Utd had 6 Eng players and Chelsea 4.

Its a good plan in theory

It is a nono - its discriminatory, a bit like telling a circus troop that a percentage of them must be gyp...oh hang on...

Not a chance of getting this through - especially in the case of players from EU countries. What does he mean by "foreign" anyway?

The UK in particular is a major problem. For FIFA and EUFA purposes, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are separate nationalities. What implications would this have on English clubs who field large contingents from those countries?

Only heard the headline on this, but the topic title suggests its Champions League teams only? If so I can't see it helping the situation - instead any decent young talent will be even more priced out the market by the top 4 teams than now. Many of the Premiership managers have commented from time to time about buying British or English as being more expensive than buying an equivalently talented player from abroad.
I think if every team in the EPL had to have 4 or 5 English players for normal league matches it would make it far bigger positive effect.

Definitely a good idea, as long as the league doesn't suffer as a consequence. While we can all moan about how Arsenal sometimes field 11 foreign players, you can't argue that there's a lot of foreign players that have seriously brightened up the league.

On the other hand, there's a lot of dross brought in to...

Sadly I think football has changed so much from being a sport to a business that Blatter is trying to get back to the roots and I hope he succeeds, but I don't think he will.

My background is a Saturday league player for 10 years before retiring at the end of last season. I really enjoyed playing, but in the last 10 years, I've seen money change who owns the clubs, what their ambitions are and the "local lad made good" is a rarity rather than the norm. Good luck to all the players who are making a mint out of it, but it's not about the players, supporters or the club, it's about making money at the highest level of the game and the rest are hanging on for dear life.

Blatters proposals are sound in principal, but difficult in execution as the debate about what is a home player will be difficult to decide.

Sadly it is these situations which turn me away from watching football generally. I love the game, really enjoy seeing non-league games and also players of real quality. Sadly money has infiltrated over the years and we now have Blatter trying to bring the game back to the fans... I hope he succeeds, but I for one am disillusioned with the money men and don't want to line their coffers

No one seems to want to expand on the "British Isles" player dilemma.

From what I can see, players from the following countries would fall foul of Blatter's rule:

Scotland
Northern Ireland
Wales
Irish Republic
The Channel Islands

He really needs to define more precisely what he really means when he uses the words "home grown". It is a very vague term as it doesn't define "home" in any way.

My guess is Blatter and co. are fed up with British clubs dominating the Champions League.

Liverpool only had two English players in their starting 11 for their final game of the season away at Spurs. Gerrard and Carragher. Crouch and Pennant were not even in the match day squad which is below;

Pepe Reina
Emiliano Insua
Jamie Carragher
Martin Skrtel
Alvaro Arbeloa
Ryan Babel
Steven Gerrard
Javier Mascherano
Dirk Kuyt
Fernando Torres
Andriy Voronin

Can't you apply for residency after being in the country for 5 years?

Plus that would make it very unfair when you compare the sizes of the country's plus populations.

I just see it as another pair of french idiots trying what they can to stop england being at the
top.

I'm totally against it, where would the league be without some of the foreigners that have made it it special.

As I said earlier, non-English players have ALWAYS been a major feature in English League clubs. This is not a new phenomenon.

Not in so many numbers though. We have far too many average non English players in our Football and Rugby. They are stopping the development of huge amounts of Home Grown talent, which is having a massive impact on ourt National teams. Football has been like this for years, rugby is now getting seriously worrying.

Generally in Football, Brazil + Argentina are the best. Why? They have virtually no over seas players in their domestic leagues. Nearly every single player playing for a Brazilian Club side is Brazilian. Why are New Zealand, Australia and South Africa consistantly the best in Rugby Union. There domestic leagues and comps are full off home grown talent with virtually no over seas players.

Its not rocket science why our National teams stuggle and bar one, one off rugby side, won nothing on the world stage since 1966.
