Heard anything further on Brian Smith. From what i'm hearing the RFU approached Irish, who said no way, but Smith is very keen on the Eng job. Might be wrong but seems it come down to the compensation package the RFU will pay to Irish.

Irish having a ready made replacement in Mike Catt also works in the RFU's favour.

Anything solid coming out of Irish recently ????

(i see Waters has left Wasps too)

I belive he is back in the country now, has been back in Australia for the last couple of weeks. Talk amongst the supporters suggests Irish are looking at replacements for him.

Yeah, I think if the compensation is enough, they may let him go. I imagine a lot depends of Catt;s feelings, regarding whether he is ready to take on a bigger role at Irish. Although, between him and the forwards coach, Booth, I think they could handle it.

Irish's initial statement suggested they would not let him go, but like you say he really wants the job, and I think he might just be able to take the job now.

The perfect solution would be to take the England job part-time, Shaun Edwards style, for perhaps one more season, allowing a transisiton period.

That could work well. Wouldn't mind that at all as long as there were no Club vs Country problems. Wasps have been very good to Edwards and the WRU.

Looks like it could be a done deal then.

You going to the GP Final. I'll be there to see Tigers crowned Champions again and ruin Florenc's day. Should be about 12 of us in the Orange Tree afterwards, mostly wearing some really stupid Tigers hats. If we have any left from the EDF. I think most got lost in Cardiff bars

No, not going to the final, my Tigers supporting mate has a cricket match. But I will be at Twickenham on Sunday for the Baa Baa's game.

You missed a good game. Plenty of mistakes from the Baa Baa's, but hey as long as they tried thats all you can ask.

Smith was one of five candidates who applied for the post by the closing date of May 23. In the interim each has been interviewed by the union; three applicants were rejected, leaving Johnson with a shortlist of Smith and an unnamed coach from the Guinness Premiership. London Irish are, however, making it difficult to secure Smith's services, a situation from which Australia could profit.

Smith, The Times understands, has been to his native Australia to discuss a position under Robbie Deans, the new Wallabies head coach. He has made no secret of his desire to coach at international level and is frustrated by the club's attempt to block his ambition. Conor O'Shea, who is leaving the RFU shortly to join UK Sport and who is to become a non-executive director at London Irish, is mediating in an attempt to break the impasse.

Johnson wants someone in place before the August training camps, involving the elite and Saxons squads, take place. The 32 players for each of those squads are announced on July 1.

Seems Smith is definatley looking for a way out of Irish then, would rather see him as the England backs coach and not for the Aussies, as he's a great coach. Shame he doesn't feel there is any more to achieve at Irish, because they are far from the complete team.

I imagine its now down to the London Irish board, Mike Catt and Toby Booth. If MC and TB were happy to take complete control then surely the board would be happy?

So Stimmers, who do you think this other applicant is, could it be Catt do you think? I know he was interested.

I'd be amazed if it's Catt. He's only had a part time coaching role with Irish thus far and stepping up to sort out the massive problems with the National teams backline is IMO a job too far for him at this stage.

Who's the other Applicant. God knows. I can't see it being Meehan so im a little lost as to who it could be.

Can't come soon enough.

Bit of result for Jonno if this is correct as he must have turned Deans and the Aussies down
