A few tips:
Open water swim? If so, try it out first in training if you can - very different to swimming in a pool.
Try out a 'block' training session of going straight from bike to running - it feels strange at first (jelly legs) but with training you can learn to run close to 100% of normal speed.
You can save a load of transition time by not bothering with socks.

I've not done one, but my friends who have say no socks is much quicker, but practice first as your shoes could tear your feet to shreds. Open water swimming is very different and you might have to wear a wetsuit. Brick or block sessions are a must. Try to pace effort evenly, too many people blow up on one event and don't have anything left for the run

Same advice really,
I find open swimming easier as your more buoyant (with a wet suit that is) don't buy all the gear and have no idea, just go along (I used a mountain bike for my first one) and enjoy it give you some goals to train for when you enter your next one.
Oh its even more enjoyable when you overtake people on a old beat up bike!
