Watched this on ESPN Classic last night - brought back some memories. Memories of probably what a better team we were 12 years ago than now. Okay, it was Scotland and it was at home but the support, the Wembley pitch (flat as a pancake, unlike now) Shearer with hair, Gary Neville looking about eight years old, McMananman running with the ball - he was my Man of the Match to be honest ... it all came flooding back - the hopes, the dreams, the expectations.

And the naff opening ceremony.

And Gazza's goal - he did fk all for 80 mins and then scored that ... incredible.

I somehow knew we weren't going to win though as I had booked a fortnight's holiday in the States starting a week later (flying off as Eng played Spain) and so have never seen the semi-final against Germany - did someone hit the post or summat and Gazza missed from a foot - is that true?

That goal... hmm.

The press were giving a hard time about Gazza and his antics prior to the tournament then he pulled of that bit of jaw dropping magic and then the next day the Scum printed a front page apology and called him a genius.

Cracking match, great team.

Remmber it well. I was at my mates stag do at York races. We were in the posh enclosure but they weren't showing the footy so a group of us (stag and best man not big fans) sneaked off to watch it with the plebs in the main stand. fantastic and the place went mad after gazza scored.

Semis was a great game up until we lost!

Gazza could have won it with seconds to go but just couldn't reach the ball at the far post from a low cross. Great theatre!

That was a great team with SAS up front, Seaman, Gazza, Macca, Neville, Pearce, Adams, Southgate, Anderton and Ince.

I can't believe how long ago that was! The goal from Gazza was, and still is absolute genius.
