My nomination has to be Tiger Woods:

Has excelled at all levels off the game - hatrick of US Juniors and Amateurs, 64 US Tour Victories, 24 other pro victories, 13 majors. Likely to be the first billionaire sportsman. Has hit many clutch shots coming down the stretch. Has revolutionised the modern game, as well as taking it to a new level in terms of power, fitness and professionalism. Is also a fantastic ambassador for the sport.

I'd nominate Sir Donald Bradman and his test average of 99.94 in second place.

At a professional level, yes.

When played by fat old men, no.

You're asking on this forum? Stirling Moss - probably the greatest all-round driver of all time.

Muhammed Ali. Intelligent, good looking, supremely confident, and at his best, unbeatable.

Mark Spitz was always a hero to me when I was a nipper. When I discovered petrol based sports, it's a close call between Barry Sheen and Ayrton Senna.

I excluded a racing driver for the following reasons:

1. There aren't that many pro racing drivers compared to pro golfers, footballists etc

2. It is by and large a sport of privelige (more so than golf). Would Lewis be where he was without major cash investment?

3. You'd have all agreed with me, and that isn't what the P&P is all about!!

Be interested to know why you chose Moss over Fangio or Schumacher?

Valentino Rossi.

I admit I'm biased but, he's such a laugh and has brought many new fans (I think, anyway), to Moto GP.
Watch the grid before the race, Toseland (who's also great) and pals are staring down to the 1st corner, focussing, while Rossi's having a laugh and chatting to the brolly dolly, etc. Fantastic!

Max Woosnam.

Captained England Football team.

Won Wimbledon in the doubles competition.

Made a maximum break at snooker.

Scratch golfer.

Really good at cricket and a pioneer of table tennis, according to Wiki he beat Charlie Chaplain, playing with a butter knife.
