Can't believe none of the Aussies on here thought to post this classic bit from the second one-day final between India and Australia

Ponting's post-dismissal reaction and post-defeat interview are also important highlights

Where's that Aussie poster who always boasted about the aussies (cant remember his name now) - they were totally knocked for a 6 by the Indians!
Domination by Australian Cricket is a thing of the past...
That would be me... sorry but only just caught up on the news. Well done the injins. outplayed us in both finals but hardly the end of our domination - you wish!Domination by Australian Cricket is a thing of the past...

Relative to our population size (of just over 20 million people), Australia has one of the
largest diasporas in the world, with some 1 million Australians, or 5 per cent of our
population, currently living outside our national borders.
On a population flow basis, in 2002/03 (the latest available data), more than two-thirds of
Australians departing our shores went to just five locations: the United Kingdom (21 per
cent); New Zealand (17 per cent); the United States (16 per cent); and Hong Kong and
Singapore (both around 6 per cent).
On a pure numbers basis, in 2001/02, more than 200,000 Australians were based in the
United Kingdom, 135,000 in Greece, 106,000 in the United States, 68,000 in New Zealand,
and 46,000 in Hong Kong.
The demographic profiles of Australian emigration differ substantially, depending on the
country of destination. For example, Australians departing for the United States tend to be
older than those going to the United Kingdom.
According to Australian Government figures, of those moving to the UK, 76 per cent are
aged between 20 and 34 years, with 14 per cent between 35 and 64 years. For the United
States, the figures are 46 per cent and 34 per cent respectively.
There are also marked differences in the gender balances of Australians moving to the UK
and the US. The sex ratio (males per 100 females) in 2001/02 of Australian long term
departures to the UK was 81 (that is, 81 males per 100 females moved to the UK), in contrast
to the figure of 107 for the US.

interesting info Stimmers... I prob slot straight into those stats as I took a 4 year contract to work in Oxford but am moving back in June.
Do you seriously want to compare 24-35 YO professionals leaving Oz for 2-5 years to gain experience in UK or US for example to the hoards of 35+ families and semi retirees 45+ who MOVE to Australia to live.. for ever.
Sure... many of the Aussies who come to UK/Europe/USA with the intention of returning to Oz after a few years may end up staying if they marry etc but by far the majority return to Oz.

I know quite a few Aussies and Kiwis over here and the vast majority come over for 4 or 5 years contracting, earn loads of money and then fk off back home (thank christ! )
The appeal of europe is the diversity of culture and everything is so close so its easy to do. The problem with Australia is its miles from anywhere so its a pain in the arse to go on holiday anywhere decent.

I think you'll find the amount of Australians who leave and don't come back is on the up, big time, especially the older people who are increasingly heading to the US and Canada.Do you seriously want to compare 24-35 YO professionals leaving Oz for 2-5 years to gain experience in UK or US for example to the hoards of 35+ families and semi retirees 45+ who MOVE to Australia to live.. for ever.

Anyway, i think its a strange point. I'd be unhappy if i came from a country of people who didn't want to travel, live abroad etc. Travel is one of the best things life has to offer and im lucky to have been able to travel a lot. I have also lived in Sydney and Melbourne and enjoyed both, especially the latter but if i was to move abroad for a decent amount of time now, Australia would deff not be my destination of choice. Despite what Australians think, they are far more interesting, stunnning, beautiful, wondeful places in the world than Australia.
The more people travel/live abroad the better in my opinion.

Absolutely - agree 110%. There are far too many people with a blinkered view of the world simply because they have never ventured out of their own back yard.My original point stimmers is still valid.. there are many more "too & froms" looking for a new life in Oz than aussies permanatly leaving Oz for here. Leaving a country for 2-5 year work contract or working holiday to experience life/earning on the Nth side of the rock is completely different to "I'm jack of life in the UK I'm off to canada/oz/nz"

Interesting that those stats show more Aussie women come to the UK than men. Your fellow Aussie men are obviously not addressing some areas well enough Perhaps too busy playing cricket/rugby or drinking to show a girl a good time?
No mate, the Aussies simply ship all of the fat loud mouthed ugly birds over here and keep the nice ones for themselves.Edited by Vesuvius 996 on Thursday 6th March 14:37
