I've been going to the gym regularly (3-4 times a week) for the last 3-4 months with a mate. We vary the cardio elements to include rowing on a Concept 2 rowing machine. We row 4 minute sessions on maximum resistance, and normally average 925-950 metres. I got a bit carried away this morning and managed 1107 metres in 4 mins.....Damn near killed me, that was an hour ago and I still don't feel well.

I've just had a look on the Concept 2 website, convinced I'd broken a World or at the very least a European record. Only to find that for my age (40-49) the record is measured over 2000m, and the best is Ralph Eckhart Germany 5:58.3.......That's inhuman.

I think I'll have a lie down in a darkened room for a couple of weeks, before trying again.

Any other rowers on here?

I regularly do the 2000m on a concept 2 in 8:30 and I'm fat so I think that's pretty good going, especially as all the dust on it creates more resistancebiggrin.
My PB started with a 7.
Chap at work is a rowing coach and he manages some silly strokes per minute.

You know you've had a good workout on one when you try and stand up and your legs don't work!

I thought this was going to be to do with slipping out of the seat

Handy hint of the day:

Apparently sitting right back on the seat so your arse is hanging off will make you sit up straighter and improve your stroke.

Certainly did, my poor legs were like jelly. I thought I was reasonably fit, but I think I have found my fitness nemesis in the Concept 2. Is your 8.30 on setting 7, is that a better resistance for a longer row?

Lower resistance is better for cardio-vascular fitness but I set mine to half so it still gives a good simulation of my bodyweight in a boat for when I go canoeing.

I do a lot of training, kickbxing, swimming, gym work and run 10k a couple of times a week - i;d say im pretty fit, but one machine i simply cannot use its a rowing machine. Not that i can't, i just hate it. I do the odd 500m burst to get my heart rate up, but rowing for 7-8 mins solid is my idea of hell.

I'd rather run for an hour

We have a league table up at work(all done at maximum resistance), currently I'm sat at no. 2 with 6min 58 secs. The guy who beat me did it by less than a second. I've had about 5 cracks at it, and can't beat him.

I also thought the record was held by Matthew Pinsent at 5 min 45 secs.

I have just got in from the gym, I had a warm up on a cross trainer for about 10 mins. Then I rowed my first 2000m, I read through the instructions for the first time. I set the drag at 5 and then cracked on....
I managed 7:52.7, I'm going to have to keep working at this....

I started rowing a few years ago with the mission of doing 2k under 8 mins. This took me a couple of weeks (I was fat and unfit)

Going twice a week, I eventually got it down to 7:20 on full resistance and it was killing me. I'd go into the gym, warm up, then hit the rower and half collapse afterwards.

I gave up in the end as I found it more effective to do a spread of other stuff rather than an intense burst on the rower. I run for 40 mins each session now and it's definitely more my liking.

Good fun though, and really good for fat burning. A mate of mine used to row properly at university. His best time on the Concept was 6:40 which kind of pissed on my bonfire really....biggrin

I'm going to stick at the rowing as my knees are shagged from years of football and skiing, they get too sore from prolonged running even in decent trainers. 7.20 on full is a hell of a task, well done.

Speaking of having your bonfire properly put out, I used to have a girlfriend in Henley on Thames. She was a member of the local gym, where I used to attend as a guest. I'd warmed up one day and was having a crack at the rowing, when this big lad in a blue/white faded rowing suit strapped in to the C2 next to me. I looked again, it was James Cracknell who is built like the proverbial outhouse. Flippin' eck, talk about having sand kicked in your face.
