Neither - it happened 50 years ago. These were footballers, not war veterans!

United fan here.

It would be nice to have a minute silence but lets get real - it isn't going to happen.

They should make it an applause just because of the idiots within both sets of fans who don't understand the concept of respect.

It's going to end in a big mess.

Puggit - They might not be war heroes but whats wrong with pausing for thought for those that died in one of footballs biggest tragedies? It's no hardship for anyone.

I agree with you. As a Liverpool fan I think it would be best for all concerned if Utd went with applause, as its clear a certain section of City fans will abuse a silence.

Hum … this is a difficult one.

It happened over 50 years ago; the time for ‘respectful silences’ has passed and a minutes applause would be much appropriate now I think.

I see United have said that “it (applause) is inappropriate, given that 23 people died in the plane crash, in which seven United players were killed".

However I think they have missed the point. People wouldn’t be applauding the incident itself, that would be sick. They are applauding the memory of the players and all the joy and happiness they bought.

Beside applause is much more likely to be adhered to and if a few people choose not to clap, or worse boo, so what; you’re not going to be able to hear them over the majority any way. However and unfortunately I know this from personal experience, it only takes literally one or two idiots in a football crowd to completely ruin a minute’s silence.

Wrong decision made in my opinion.

Definitely a minutes silence for me........still, surely they could have arranged for United to have been playing anyone but City or Liverpool on that day.

The fixtures list is done by computer but clubs can request certain fixtures aren't (or are) played on certain dates, but this has to be done before the start of the season.

Am surprised that Man U didn't ask.

There's got to be some human input, how many times over the last few years have we had 'Showdown Sunday' or something similar involving the big 4.

I'd go for silence. The applause thing is fine for old footballers who die of natural causes, but the air-crash is different.

If people disrespect it, fine, that says all you need to know about the club involved.
I support a club with a bitter rivalry (don't we all...LOL!), but I'd respect this sort of memorial.

It should be made clear to all fans that any disrespect shown during the 60secs will get you ejected from the ground.

Then get the stewards working for their money.

A minute's applause is a daft idea. I don't see people clapping at funerals.

But you rarely get pissed up enemies of dead people rolling up at a burial shouting abuse.

I agree, silence should be the choice but it's inviting trouble. Sad fact but a valid reason for applause on this occassion.

scratchchin I dunno.

Sad really that all this is in debate anyway. Just the small minority endangering what should be a humane remembrance. There really are some tosspots in this country.

Could do what they do in Spain - silence but with suitable moanful music playing over the PA.
If it's only one or two idiots then it might help drown them out, although not much use against thousands.

Sadly, once again, football is showing it's ugly underbelly. This doesn't happen at rugby matches beyond the odd drunk who wanders in late and doesn't realise what is happening.

Can't have happened 'over' 50 years ago since this is the 50th anniversary wink

But anyway, why should time change the way you treat a dignified memorial? The Armistice was 90 years ago, are you suggesting we have a round of applause before the Last Post at the Cenotaph?

Why would one set of supporters show disrespect.?
I know they will but why, that is the question.
What on earth is the matter with these people.?

Given that a number of City fans refer to United fans as "Munichs" .........

My PE teacher at school, (before he moved to the USA) was one of the surviving "Busby babes" Dennis Violett,.........nice guy and wonderful underrated player.......

Don't forget, one of England's finest ever goalkeepers, ex Manchester City legend Frank Swift also died in the same horrific crash.....

I hope City fans remember that........

I would definitely 100% prefer a minutes silence...but given the obvious certainty that a few tts would spoil it, a minutes applause is a much better plan.

One of our former chairmen died a few weeks ago, at Mondays home game (The first since he died) had 30 seconds of silence followed by 30 seconds of applause.

Sadly the concept of respect is lost on todays youth! Many times I've been stood observing a minutes silence on the terrace to have kids all around setting off mobile phones, laughing & gurning at their mates! mad
