At 16 I represented Suffolk twice, then got a girlfriend (now wife), and couldn't be bothered to travel to Sudbury for training. I played some local club stuff till I was 20 ish, then gave up. I decided to get back into it a year or so ago, then tore all the ligaments in my knee. I went back just before Christmas for a couple of weeks, went okay, so will start again next month. Still using a 10 year old Carlton.

Don't quite see how a crappy Vauxhall affects your play but hey ...

Me and the wife play quite a bit - that and squash - just to keep fit really

Suffered the ultimate humiliation last weekend when my 16yo son beat me for the first time ... 3-1. I'd last played him on holiday last year and only won then by the skin of my teeth but of course, he's a year older and stronger now and I'm just a year older!

Squash he still gets mullered at though (due to the power) but I can't make the extra power I have work for me at badminton - he seems to negate it somehow - plus he's a damn site quicker round the court than me.

Squash I can control against him as I sit on the T and dictate ... at badders he has me running back and forth to the net like a bloody yo-yo hehe

Then I collapse.

You should be older and wiser. There's an old boy at our club (60 years old absolute minimum) and he has all the youngsters running around, fantastic placement.

Force him to wherever he's weaker everytime, most, non competetive or club players are not the stongest at placing a shuttle on their backhand, capable of hitting it okay, but not getting it to where they want. Try hitting to his backhand every shot for a game (assuming he's not club/county), see how you get on. Of course it makes it a boring game for you, having to do one thing all the time, but winning is all that's important with family.

My dad's ex county, I beat him for the first time at about 15, he never got close after that, act now of forever be condemed to him playing his 'old man' like me hehe

Well I am both, but seemingly not on a badminton court ...

You think I have no tactics? I specifically try and hit it to his backhand most points - all it has served to do is make it better hehe

I mainly (now he is older) have trouble winning points when I am serving ... anything short he seizes on and smashes it back at me - anything high and deep (if it's not out) he smashes it back at me still ... any tips? I do try and vary it but he IS like lightning compared to me now ... that said he can't beat me over 22 yards at indoor cricket, but four or five yards then yes.

Tennis, on holiday last year - thrashed, he's lucky to get to 15. Squash anytime - thrashed - he may get four points ... badminton anytime - I fear I will be mullered every time now. Why? They're all similar - you wear white and have a racquet and a ball ... jester

The humiliation of it ... hehe

Well if you've tried that and failed scratchchin the only thing left is body shots. Aim at him, directly at him, about chest height. Not strictly playing nicely but works. It's the most awkward shot to return and place..usually going short or mid court.

Good luck old timer wink

I used to play professionally for 8 years, was national champion once and was in world top 10 for a bit(mixed doubles).

Just recently started playing a bit of squash, very interesting tactically.

Tennis, God no. Can serve well but the grip needed for topspin and having to keep a stiff wrist(snigger) is completely alien to me and just means the ball flies out the back of the court at 200mph a lot of the time!!

You were handy then! laugh

I've played a bit of squash, am okay, but I couldn't switch to tennis either (not saying I was anywhere near your standard of badders - I was a sh*t county player) strange though, because I know a few useful badminton players who couldn't hit a tennis ball properly for toffee

I used to play quite a bit when I was a teenager, and was in a couple of local clubs and played in the league matches. The highest I got was representing my area at county level.

I played for fun at uni with friends but haven't had a good knock-about for ages. Since moving down south I haven't found a willing partner frown.

Squash you can transfer your grip/ wrist skills to no problem, but tennis is difficult.

Same the other way too. Once had a friend who played decent tennis, tried to play badders but was hopeless. couldn't use his wrist, wrong grip, couldn't play overheads!!

They might be raquet sports but they are a million miles apart in terms of technique and very difficult to transfer skills between the two with the exception of the tennis serve for a badminton player.
