I don't have access to the stats on his performances but it's generally considered that a player needs a decent run in a team to fine his full form which he doesn't get.

As a fellow shorty it pains me to say it but he's just not big enough. Jol and it would seem Ramos consider playing two small strikers (Keane and Defoe) a bad idea as it limits the teams ariel threat. Keane has been playing well so Defo can't get in the starting line up.

Personally I think it would be best for Defoe and Spurs if he moved on. I’d wish him well at another premiership club.

Er...didn't I read somewhere the Defoe's Goals-per-minute-on-pitch was the best in the Premier league this season - surpassing Ronaldo, Rooney, Toure etc...

Yes he misses a few but if that statement is true then he is a phenomenal goal-scorer considering that his appearances are generally as a substitute.

I've got to agree - didn't see the sitter he missed last night but I've seen him fail to even get it on target many a time when that should be the very least he does.

Confidence is a big thing with him though I think and while he doesn't get a run in the first team that won't improve - but if the miss was as bad as you say, then he didn't himself any favours - perfect chance to get the winner at your biggest rivals and he muffs it.

No way should he pull on an Eng shirt - he isn't good enough.

Watching the FA highlights last weekend there are a fair few players about who may be good athletes and able to run all day long - but their basic ball control and first touch is frankly, shocking.

Defoe scored 20 goals last season - I won't even mention that he wasn't first choice...

It's only cos Berbagod & Keano are the first choice strikers that he isn't scoring more goals.

Yes he misses a few but he puts himself into positions where he can miss a few but still score loads.

Finally - the spurs faithful wouldn't love him as much if they thought he was crap - they don't want him to leave...

Can someone explain how in an ice hockey game, the net is so small, the minder so big and yet there are loads of goals and in football, the net is huge, the keeper relatively small within it and yet we get 0-0 draws?

Perhaps Defoe plays 90 mins upfront for both sides? hehe

For Jermaine Defoe now read Andy Cole 10 years ago ... (post-Newcastle - his main misses were at Man Utd and I kow he scored a lot of goals there but he should have had twice as many)

Can we have examples of players who you just KNOW would score from similar positions ...

1 Jimmy Greaves

Before my time but I've read that although he would punish weaker teams with poor defences he went missing against bigger teams.

rolleyes

Yeah...if you consider...

Brazil
Argentina
Italy
Holland
Spain
Czechoslovakia
Yugoslavia
Hungary
Rest Of The World X1

...Weaker teams

In all 44 goals in 57 internationals - not far short of a goal a game for England. It will NEVER be repeated.

STILL Chelsea's club record goal scorer with 41 league goals in a season 1960-61
9 goals in 12 games for AC Milan (and defending was an Italian speciality back then - trust me on this)

Spurs club record of 266 goals in 379 matches.

Top League goalscorer in four seasons for Spurs (1963, 1964, 1965 and 1969) and 2 seasons for Chelsea. His record of finishing top goalscorer in six seasons has never been matched.

He retired in 1971 having played 516 Football League games and netted 357 goals, an all-time record.

Of course he always went missing against Man Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool...

hehe

44 international goals in 57 England appearances don't suggest that do they?

A quote from a Spurs fan's website:

Greaves’ goalscoring record is untouchable in the football league; I cant think of a single other forward who scored as often as he did over so many seasons. In five seasons at Chelsea, and nine at Tottenham, he finished the top league scorer six times- something that has never been equalled in England. He was able to find space with ease, contributing both to his goals tally and the myth that he would ‘do nothing for the entire match, apart from score three times.’ He had the ability to carry the ball at his feet and an unerring eye for goal. In the modern game his worth would be impossible to measure, and he would have Premiership defences for breakfast.

Yes, he really was THAT good.

Witness this - against Man U no less.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jYTLfukNUg

I know the game was slower in those days but the speed of Greaves' feet bare testament to his talent - both feet as well, he took the ball at speed like no other - except maybe old Bestie.

This was in the days when Spurs played football ala Arsenal today.

Edit: the best bit in that Spurs clip are the bog rolls fired on from the crowd - you just don't see that any more - the last time I saw it Bolton had equalised in the last minute of a cup tie v Saints at the Dell in about 1994.

How sick must his girlfriend (and her mum) be at no longer being part of "Defoe's money".

hehe

Still, he's shot himself in the foot by hooking up with Teddy's ex Danielle Lloyd...

Never mind his goal scoring; is Jermaine trying to modelling Wembley stadium on his head?

I actually laughed out loud at the end of 'A Million Pound Gaff in the Sun' last night when her and her mum were looking at all these flash pads, then at the end 'They've since split up' brilliant.

what a waste of space, why is it people think he is any good.

crouch for instance is a real goal scorer, look at his international record and his liverpool record when rafa the idiot actually plays him

(yes, im a liverpool fan and beleive that torres and crouch is the No1 selection)

Crouch is so awkward that he's easy to play against. He also ALWAYS puts his hands on his marker's shoulders during a challenge and gets pinged for a free kick. Wiser heads will play him out of games.

Another vote for Kuyt with Torres. There were signs of very good things early in the season when they played together. You can play a different kind of game with Crouch but he's limited.

Anelka's biggest problem are his brothers IMO, and their collective greed.

So Owen (as an example) never scored against the mighty Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and so on (and I'm sure if you look at other strikers from recent times you would find exactly the same thing). Owen has played a lot of games against 'quality' opposition, probably a lot more than Crouch. Some of that is down to alleged talent (which I would disagree with - I think he's pretty one dimensional and that dimension is slowly but surely deserting him) but just as much is down to Michael Owen as a name, image, reputation and the like.
What would Crouch's record look like if he had the same image that Owen has and was picked for every game where he was even half fit?

He might not always have been on the money in his younger years but is now an underrated player IMO (but needs a bit of weight on and a few lessons from Big Dunc F on how to put yourself about).

As for Kuyt - likeable in the same way a Donkey is (what a coincidencebiggrin). Absolutely hopeless within 20 yards of goal. £10 million for Kuyt or £10.9m for Dimitar Berbatov - 'nuff said really!
