I think each club should field at least 5 English players to start each game. I don't think this would contravene EU employent law (I may be wrong), as the club wouldnt be refusing to let a player earn his living (i.e. they can still sign as many non-English as they want - and pay their wages too), they simply would'nt be allowed to select that many foreigners to be on the pitch to start the game?

The England performance tonight confirms this is an issue. The Prem is the richest league in the world, but we can't even qualify for Euro 2008. It's enough to put you off footy (and being a Palace fan I've had plenty of excuses to be put off in the past few years...).

Disgraceful.

Yeh something like that will probably happen.. I hope it does anyway but I'd prefer...

Premiership.... 2 english players minimum on the pitch at the start
(possibly up this to 4 for domestic cup competitions)
Championship ..... 6 english players minimum on the pitch at the start
(derestrict to 4 for cup sompetitions)

or something like that.. it would be a shame to restrict the foreign talent in the premiership as we get to see the best players in the world but at lower levels the rule could be more effective and be a better breeding ground for english talent.

shoutMr Barwick.. is there a job going yet.. this advice doesnt come free.

There is a load of EU anti competition law that will prevent quotas from being imposed. The only way for it to work would be by self regulation and the will is not there. The Premiership teams are too greedy and lets be real here - most premiership teams are now owned by foreigners who don't give a fk about England. You think Abramovich was in the stand in Israel on saturday hoping that England and not Russia would qualify? Dream on.

Football clubs are businesses at the end of the day and will play the best players regardless of nationality.
We failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup only two years after the start of the Premiership when the percentage of foreign players was tiny compared with now.
To my mind the current problem is we have very few English international class let alone world class players which is why we sub-standard players playing for England as there is little competition for places in the team or indeed for the managers position.

Explain, then, our failure to get close to winning anything in the period from 1966 to 1992 (I think?) when the premiershit started and all the o/seas players came in.

ETA - Have the press not been telling me for ages that this is the golden generation of English players? All brought up in the premiershit years?
