I'd pick Kaka for starters. He gets into the England team because his dad once flew over London.

Foster
Richards
A Cole
Terry
Ferdinand/Carragher (he will come back if given a CB role under a new manager)
Hargreaves
Gerrard
J Cole
Wright Phillips
Rooney
Crouch

Contenders:

Carson (shouldn't be destroyed by tonight's performance, but Foster is the better keeper)
Lescott
Shorey
Young
Agbonlahor
Barry
Jenas
Defoe
Bent

i.e time to build for South Africa and give a crop of younger players time to bed in, supported by a core of older heads.

Bear in mind that you are picking a team which must be on top of it`s game in 2 or 3 years time.

Does the person picking best XI get the England job?

No the person picking the worst team gets that. Why change old habits?

Impossible to pick a proper WC squad; who know what (if any) major talent will emerge in the next three years?

Agreed, but the fact is a team will have to be picked and it is a good opportunity now to look to the future...

How about Venables as a tactician/squad picker and then someone from outside the game to manage/motivate?

Im glad the fool has gone and think it is now time to bin some of the hangers on and build a young team for the future, no competitions for a few years now so will give them all time to work together.

Gonna think long and hard(too much time on my hands) about a new team.
