From what I've heard, his contract was running out at the end of the season and it seemed he wasn't going to get it renewed by the new chairman so he had no choice to leave
It seems pretty clear that the geezer who is taking over at Birmingham doesn't want Bruce, so he's just taken his opportuntity and got out while there was a "good" job to walk into
