So who're your favourite sporting heroes/icons?
Mine, in no particular order:
  • I.T. Botham: single-minded aggression and will to win.
  • Steve Davies: absolute dedication.
  • Ian Holloway: the best post match interviews*.

* For example: "I don't see the problem with footballers taking their shirts off after scoring a goal. They enjoy it and the young ladies enjoy it too. I suppose that's one of the main reasons women come to football games, to see the young men take their shirts off. Of course they'd have to go and watch another game because my lads are as ugly as sin."

Ian Holloway is indeed a legend for shooting from the hip at all times.

However my heroes are people who have characteristics I aspire to...
Michael Schumacher
Martin Johnson
Colin McRae
Glenn McGrath

Isn't that an Oxy-moron.

No sportsman is a heroe, they play sport professionally.

Some out of work activities may be Heroic, but not just by sport

Steve Peat.

2 X World cup Champion
2 X European Champion
3 X Lisbon Downtown winner
X–games Gold Medalist
7 X British Champion
7 X British Series Champion
1 X British 4 X Champion
3 Silver Medals at World Championships

Yorkshireman, hero to many a young lad, and to top it all off, a genuine, down to earth, good guy, with a lot of time for his sport and for helping others to achieve the successes he has enjoyed.

Whenever people talk about Brits being rubbish at sport, I bring his name up. Incredibly successfull and long career.

Steve Waugh.. great captain, good cricketer, comitted to some of the poorest kids on the planet (charity work).

On bikes, Wayne Gardner cos he put 500's on the map in Oz and then Mick Doohan & Rossi for their consistent No.1 status.

Otherwise Ayrton Senna was my long time hero & unsurpassed IMO.
