FA Cup day is upon us in the Lower Leagues,we all hope for the same thing and thats advancing into the next rounds and ultimately the hope of a good draw AWAY at a Premiership Giant[reguardless of the result],but most of all a BIG payday.
Last year we got as far as the 2nd round with some good days out along the way and a trip to League one Chesterfield where we won 1-0
so as the Hordes from South Wales descend on us today ive only got one thing to say
COME ON YOU "STOKE" We can do this.

Cheers Mark,O well thats our dreams over for another season
Heres a report ive done for the BTFC website, maybe the first for this seasons FA Cup,certainly the last for us.

One thing about being Self Employed is you have to exercise a certain amount of discipline,so if i wanted to go to the game this Tuesday then i would have to make up the time by going straight to work after i left the Camrose tonight.
Four lads climbed aboard my taxi at the station Rank and requested a ride to Reading, the engineering works on the tracks had scuppered their cheap route so the alternative was the comfort of my cab and on leaving the Northern outskirts of the town i decided to zero the speedometer and check the mileage to the "Madejski Stadium",home of Premiership Reading.
I was quite surprised that it only clocked 11.5 miles,Ok thats by road but by league positions and status the difference between Reading and Basingstoke Town FC is around 6 leagues which figures around a million miles at this time........now i am guessing here but one of the reasons why most of us support a non league side is it gives us the chance to dream!..one day, just one day if we could just have that bit of luck and go on a cup run that would pit us against the might of Reading, imagine the Cup atmosphere the romantic FA cup could throw up,coupled with the fact this could be a real Derby, with both towns a mere 10 miles apart.
Dreams are Dreams and in Football terms that equates to the good old FA cup but before we could emulate last seasons Cup run there was the small matter concerning Newport County at the Camrose this afternoon,Newport them selves eight places and 4 points higher than us in the Blue Square South would want to surpass their own cup exploits of last season.
With the Loss of Ben Wells who failed a fitness test prior to todays game Francis Vines shuffled the pack to include Joe Dolan, fresh back from injury...move Whisken to Right back and Ty Smith up to right midfeild,

Venter
Whisken Bristow Dolan Watkins
Smith Laidler Surey Warner
Charles Fitzgerald

Subs,Wright,Zygier,Hankin,Tarpey,Aneke.
With "Town" attacking the town end the first half was a bit of a scrappy tense affair and began with Newport having an early foray into our half that was cleared with a good block by Bristow...Smith,Surey and Warner tried to combine and forced a free kick but this was also cleared.
Smith was looking solid as was Surey but another Newport run down the left saw Whisken over commit himself as the Newport player went past him and crossed, the ball was cleared for a corner and from the retake Fitz headed clear.
The home crowd gathered behind the covered end were in good voice, and all credit to the Newport fans behind the uncovered end for raising their own noise level.
Alsops height was again causing problems in defence,as it always seems to when the two sides meet, but the presence of the height of Whisken,Bristow and Dolan would hopefully check the ariel threat offered by County.
Laids won the ball in the middle of their half and crossed to Charles who pushed the ball to Warner, but last seasons goal hero at Chesterfield crossed over, and out of play.
Charles was working hard as usual and went into a challenge in their penalty area,he won the ball but it spun hopelessly away from him and to safety.
County made a substitution with Hillier on for Jenkins and some time later Newport had the ball in our net only for it to be disallowed for hand ball, which got the offending player a booking.
To be fair the first half was 'even stevens' and you could see both sides wanted it with their gritty tackling, one such tackle saw Warner stretchered off and replaced just before half time by the youngster Tarpey...Newport had a penalty appeal turned down when it looked like surey tripped Bowen in the area, one of those decisions that could have gone either way.
H/T Basingstoke Town 0 v Newport County 0.
The half began with a Newport attack which ended with a high punt over, and from another attack Newport forced a free kick when the ball played in was hit goal wards and off the bar..Newport were now enjoying some pressure and a deft head back by Dolan to Venter helped break up one such attack.
The best move of the game for us was when Smith, now playing on the left, found Charles with a long ball and from the resulting cross Fitz headed just over.....Newport again started to move the ball around and as one of their attackers tried to out turn Dolan,Dolan countered with a saving foot to clear.
Charles was running for the cause and the ex Reading youth player Tarpey was also finding his feet out on the wing, scurrying past a defender to cross but for the shot to fly over.......the play countered and Newport again went on the attack with the ever solid Bristow and the eccentric Jonti racing out of goal, who seems to love the rest of the park, clearing their lines.
Newport had another attempt over the bar and when the play swayed back up to the Newport goal the "Stoke" won a corner.....from Smiths corner high into the penalty area Watkins fired a header just clear of their bar and out.
Again Charles was running down every ball to try and pressure their keeper and on another move Laids tidied up and passed to Whisken to Surey to Charles who's cross was claimed by the Newport number one.....again Newport went forward and Watkins took the full force of a ball in the chest as a hopeful ball was played in from an attacker.
Tarps was looking dangerous and went on another good run that ended with him being floored, the resulting free kick was cleared up field by the Newport keeper..this was good pressure by "stoke" , another cross nearly found Fitz after their keeper failed to control, only for the keeper to claim with a second attempt.
Newport had another chance ,when from an attack a ball played into our packed penalty area found a Newport player waiting on our 6 yard line, but he somehow skied his shot high and over the bar....good to know all teams can do that lol.
Town had another scare as a ball into our box was met by the head of a Newport player at the far post in what seemed like a certain goal but it flew just across goal and out, past the post.
Jonti raced out to clear wildly on a couple of occasions but Newport found the breakthrough when another ball played into our area looked to scurry of a player and to the right of our goal out towards the edge of the area,Bowen who had been lively all afternoon ran onto it ,checked and crossed back across goal to Griffin waiting at the far post to rise and head down and in..... &*%$ ....1-0 to Newport.
This was a sucker punch that we always seem to fall for in the last 10-15 minutes of the second half but Fair play to both teams as this game could have gone either way and with the introduction of Wright for Smith five minutes from the end Town tried to find a leveler, this nearly came when Tarps received a good ball from Laidler and fired a cross right across the face of the Newport Goal only for it to elude everyone. including Fitz coming in at the back of the area.
The final Whistle was blown and Newport sail on in to the next round, and Good Luck to them, they wanted it....as for us we really need to start thinking hard about how we are going to bridge that gap 11.5 miles up the road ,"WE" as in all of us,Players,Supporters and Officials of Basingstoke Town FC ,lets try to make the dream happen.
