Discussion
Now that the calypso kings are in the UK isn't it time to start a new thread.
As a fully fledged convict I thought it might be nice to offer our soap dodger cousins congratulations if they are ever required or commiserations when required.
And naturally inspire the usual participants when selection and performance dilemmas arise as they most surely will

Atleast they had the sense to make Strauss the captain until Vaughan is fit again. I still think he should have been kept as captain during the ashes (instead of switching back to Fred).
I'd also go as far as to suggest that Strauss should be captain even once Vaughan is fit again.
Nice to see Hoggy and Harmy in the wickets for their clubs, lets hope they keep their form into the tests.
Edited to add a bit about the Windies:
Sarwan is a good choice for captain. Pity they haven't had more time to adjust to the english conditions first.
Not sure about Fletcher becoming their new coach though.

Totally agree. so who is going to the first test,
Not this year, last year was nut retractingly freezing at Lords in the morning. Off to Old Trafford for the Saturday this year. Might even dust off the old conch shell.
Not sure I agree with Vaughans whinge today about not being part of the dressing room during the Ashes. The last thing a team needs is a "You don't want to do it like that, you want to do it like this" influence badgering them. Get fit, get runs, win series, shut up.

He's said he will be in the dressing room and "involved". Exactly what Strauss needs.
This whole Vaughan business has been mishandled. He's missed 16 tests and is still officially captain. He should be stood down until he can prove he's fit and let a new captain get on with it.

Exactly. I remember him saying that he "was a winning Ashes captain" to justify his involvement. Well excuse me Michael but I didn't realise you won the Ashes on your own, maybe it was something to do with an inspired combination of Jones and Harmy, Flintoff at his dominant best and KP letting loose.
Surely his time is better spent back at the counties playing cricket and getting time at the crease. Or maybe he's afraid of getting injured again?
I expect Vaughan is shitting himself. Not a played much cricket, injured alot, success a distant memory. Statements I heard yesterday when he pronounced he is 'still the national Captain and, as an Ashes winning Captain has a lot to offer...blah blah blah' is his way of protecting his position.
This sort of situation is typical of the English set up. The convicts(that's my lot!) would have appointed a new Captain by now. Vaughan would need to prove fitness and form to get back in the side.

I agree. It's ludicrous. I think Strauss or Collingwood would make good captains but it's impossible for anyone to grow into it or have any influence when they are merely caretakers for the great Vaughan. I would be prepared to bet that Vaughan never again plays 5 consecutive test matches for England. He can hardly run and is a liability in the field. He's a good test skipper but no Brearley and who's to say that Strauss couldn't be equally as good? His captaincy in the world cup was not stellar and his own personal form dire. He cannot captain the ODI side because he's not even worth a place in the team. Seperate captains is an option that doesn't work so I can see no earthly reason for retaining him.
(I posted this thread to that effect a few weeks ago)

Edited to add: I'm sure that this was part of Flintoffs disillusionment during the ashes winter. He was skipper but not really skipper. It's an untenable position.

G'day lads - trust we are all well & looking forward to another English capitulation (big word 1st uppa from the con!)
Just in case you were missing me, thought I'd stick my head in to let you know I'm still around. Been in Iceland of all places recently and much to his dismay, the poor Sudefrikan lad working at the reception of my hotel copped some choke joke every day - poor bastard prob thought Iceland was the least likely place for him to cop some cricket flak () when he took a gig there!
Seriously.. all the best for this series - should be a good chance for the too&froms to build a bit of confidence after the winter bashing. Of course I wouldn't be dinky di if I wasn't supporting the rum runners but me thinks your boys should be able to win this series - good luck!
your loving convict scum bastard

Quite agree, the lad did good! I like the way way he gave Bell a 56 run headstart and beat him to the century.
Good to see the declaration was held off to get those extra few runs while the cloud moved over. I thought Strauss would pull them off once Bell got his century but those extra few runs just finished the day nicely.

I don't quite believe you lot.
During the ashes and the world cup you were all over us for being fairly upbeat about the quality of our team ( you know I'm a convict of course )
Now you have a new team, a new coach and but for Strauss ( a fine upstanding soap dodger if ever there was one ) being a bit over cautious with a declaration could have won a test.
To quote Laura Bingle, where the bloody hell are you

Declaration was at least an hour too late given the weather forecast for mon. I doubt it was Strauss's decision though, what with Vaughan in the dressing room and Moores sat next to him. Either way we would have struggled to bowl them out with only 3 bowlers and Harmison spraying it around.
One thing I dont understand. They took Bopara to the world cup and we were all impressed with his ability, both as a stroke player and as a "sticker". So why did they pick Shah ahead of him for this test match? Because they wanted to be sure that someone would fail badly so Yawn could come back in with no adverse media?
