Is Murali a chucker??
Discussion
Well, I have seen the lengthy tv assessment of Murali by Mark Nicholas last year and have been using the slo-mo on my SKy+ to look at his action, both front and side on.
Without the benefit of 3-d motion analysis, in both front and side on, he looks to alter the angle between his upper and lower arm quite a bit. Having tried to bowl this style of 'back of the hand facing the batsman' ball release, i can't see how it's not a chuck.
I know about the 'congenital deformity which means he cannot straighten his elbow'. This is not the question. If he bowls with a slightly bent arm all the way through, that would be fine.
I think he throws the ball - which is a great shame, for I think there will always be a cloud over his bowling records.

Only when ICC chanced the definition of a chucher. It used to be maximum straightning of the arm of no more than 7.5degrees its now something like 11 degrees
I might be slightly out on the actual numbers, but its a fact the rule was changed to stop him being a chucker
if Aus lose to SL on Saturday, are they going to start complaining about his action/ cheating?..Hope not.
(hope they dont start complaining about Malinga's action too)
They are better sports than that (although their PM is clearly a tt)

I thought you'd be lurking somewhere in the stratosphere

No, its been a long time since Aussies accepted the ICC views. There'll be no @Murali's a chucker' when we beat the Sri Lankans'.
But, I still think it sucks a bit that he's free to ply his trade and break records while 'throwing' the ball.

IIRC the bending angles were changed and then increased to 15deg to allow him to continue to bowl.
What a crock full, he chucks full stop, Hair and Emmerson were right all those years ago and shouldn't have been vilified for pointing it out in a place for all to see.
His action was suspect for his toppie and the offie that he really tried to rip, that's when they gave him 11 deg, then came the doosra
More angle required boys, the sub continent demands it, gotta keep H Singh legal as well, bend over ICC we the subcontinent associations need relief.
Murali should have had it coached out of him when he was a kid, long before he became a national hero and international point of debate.
Good news though is that his results against Oz are fairly poor, let's hope it continues that way when we make it.

As far as I'm concerned both actions are outside the law and both should have been banned. If they'd have been English or Australian that's what would have happened.

like who,
got any examples of english/ aus players banned other than brett lee(!)?
THere have been a few ENg and Aussie players who have had their actions 'modified'. There has also been some modification to some Pakistani quicks, IIRC.
I think anyone who really htinks Brett Lee or Lasith Malinga are throwing doesn't understand the game. There are very, very few quicks who I can remember even having a suspect action.

The soap dodgers cast doubts over Lennie Pascoe's action when he first broke into international cricket, knocked on the head very quickly.
Ian Meckiff and Charlie Griffiths had a much purer actions than what is acceptable today from the likes of Murali and Singh, Griffith was lucky to survive and Meckiff got " chucked " out of the game.
Brett Lee is not pure but oh so close and Malinga is clean.
Generally a bent arm action slows the pace men down, Murali and Singh bend their elbows to give the ball an extra tweak that can't be achieved by a finger spinner.
Alan Border always bowled with his sleeves buttoned because he felt that he may have flown close to the wind at times and didn't want to get called.
As a swing bowler I have bowled a " front of the hand " toppie as a slower ball variation and from time to time have been sure that a call could come, just from the way the delivery felt.
It is possible to bowl a front of the hand leggie, but it doesn't really rip or drop if you have a fair action because you can't get enough revolutions on the ball.

I'm with you Suthol. Not wanting to sound tttish, as an ex-pro, I have had many, many years of bowling and you do get a feel for it which, I think, the average cricket viewer doesn't really appreciate. The slow bowlers benefit from the straightening of the elbow - Murali needs to have a bent elbow to get his hand in the position he has for ball release.

You what?
I'm not taliking about every ball but Lee, Akhtar and loads of other quicks chuck the ball sometimes. They have probably taken plenty of wickets doing so as well.
They chuck and I'd say its you who does not understand the game.

I'm not going to argue about who understands the game - I have played high level cricket for a number of years and I can assure you that the chucking issue lies with spinners rather than quicks.
Anyway, SA are 5 down, so I'm off to gloat!!
