Think that's a cop out really. He could've played like that and i'm sure he will saturday for Chelsea. Its just a way of dropping him without McClaren admitting he and Gerrard can't play together.

Shame he hadn't done this last saturday, as i'm sure they would've won had Gerrard been in the middle.

I know Lampard hasn't been outstanding for England for a while, but when was the last time Gerrard had a good game for England? I mean really taken the game to an opposition like he does when hes carrying Liverpool? Lampard was superb in Euro 2004 and has scored some vital goals, where as Gerrad drifts in and out of England games. But there aren't many alternatives to L and G, we dont Hargreaves in the team tonight against these lot.

Looks like the fans will get the midfield we have been calling for:

Downing - Gerrard - Hargreaves - Lennon.

Just hope it delivers

Understatement alert.

He has barely earned a place in the squad let alone the team. That isn't his fault I suppose. We need to play the best player in every position just to start with and I don't care how big a name he is, what team he plays for or how many goals he scores for Chelsea........ he isn't the best English attacking midfielder at the moment. Gerrard, although I agree he hasn't been fantastic of late, at least makes it LOOK like he's trying.

Simple, just think back to the previous occasion he didn't play alongside Lampard.

Before Lampard broke into the team, Gerrard was our lynch-pin. We'd never lost a game with him in the side, and he'd produced many man-of-the-match performances.

Enter Lampard, and you get confusion and a result much lesser the sum of its parts.

Lampard is not totally at fault - the burden must weigh 50/50 on both Gerrard's and Lampard's shoulders, but Lampard is not the player Gerrard is, and so must be the fall-guy. If Gerrard is having a bad game, who better to bring on that Fat Frank?

Didn't see that happening...

What a shocking performance from the whole team, granted Stevie G, took the game to them in the second half, but i think we've got bigger problems than sorting those 2 out. I would rather see Lampard on the left wing instead of Mclarens love child Downing.

I'd prefer to see Frank Snr on the left wing rather than Downing!

Downing wouldn't even be a Premiership player if he were right footed. He's distinctly average at best.

alright gents,

rekon bently should be in the squad. been playing well for blackburn, played well for u21. Lennon is a good player, but i rekon bently would give more to the team.

and is it me, or am i the only one who think the german is crap. hargreaves spent more time picking the ball up in our own half then spending it attacking last night! not like we needed a defensive midf. did we! cant believe carrick, or even nigel reo dont do the job (yes i am a west ham fan!! dont rub it in) last night we needed attaking players and I just didnt see it with that team.

with all the players I rekon the best team would be:

robo
g. nevill
rio
terry
cole
J cole (left)
carrick
gerrard
bently
owen
rooney

Bently has been good this year and must be on the verge of a call up. Would disagree about reo-coker. Looked a good prospect last year but, like most of the west ham starlets, he beleives his own hype. Not good enough yet. Carrick i feel is very overated and needs to show more consistency in his game and prove he can handle the big stages. Joe cole is a must on the left wing.
