...and replacing with penalties!!

I mean seriously, wtf? Are these people actually paid to come up with these hair brained schemes? FFS!

After reading that its almost like whoever's brought up this proposal and those that have gone along with it, really don't have any clue about the game or what its like.
Seems like madness!
Draw's are a big part of the game. League football isn't about knocking one team out or anything, its about the 40 - 50 games over a season. Don't mess with our wonderful game!

What nonsense. Surely this will penalise the teams lower down the table who stand a 50/50 chance of their hard fought draw against the leaders being taken away from them?
As a Liverpool fan I've lost count of the number of clubs who park the team bus in front of the goal and hope. But I don't blame them for that. (If we are to get into the top 2 we need to learn to break down teams like this.) A point at Anfield is a bonus point. Certainly not one they'd've banked on when totting up the "Where we get 40 points from" spreadsheet at the start of the season. That point could be the difference between staying up and relegation. The point Sheff Utd got on the opening day of the season was monumental in helping them stay up.
You'll end up with a load of 85th min subs brought on just cos they're good at pens. Maybe we should keep Robbie for a few more seasons after all.

wot I know about soccer you could write on an ant's left nut but seems dumb idea in a sport where draws are so common - fair enough to force a result in sports where less than 5% of games are tied but surely the soccer heirachy should be making an effort to get rid of pissweak diving before anything else? I reckon if a player goes down & stays on the deck for more than 10 seconds they should have to go off the pitch (stretcher or otherwise) - now there's a rule change that might restore some respect for the game!

The article fails to mention one key element of the proposal...
The winner of the shootout would get 2 points, the loser 1 point. Would this make a team losing with 5 minutes to go fight much harder for the draw, and hence 2 points??

Nope, a losing team already have the incentive of a point is they salvage a draw. Drawing teams have the incentive of an extra 2 points if they get a win. The system isn't borken. So they shouldn't try and fix it!

Article says the last change of this magnitude was having 3 points for a win instead of 2. Surely a move to encourage folk to chase a win and not sit back for a draw because of the extra point. Now this suggestion seems to be encouraging the opposite.
Good point, well made!
The change to three points for a win was something that our own football league was instrumental in introducing after seasons of dull football and it had a terrific effect on the attitudes of teams in the closing minutes of a match, but as you rightly point out, teams that fancy their chances in the shoot out will no longer be encouraged to throw caution to the wind in the last five minutes!!!
