Hi Runners,
Have my first race on Sunday, its the 10 mile turkey trot! Thankfully the girlie I run with everyday is coming now she seems to keep me going.

Does anyone have any advice? I seem to get tense around my shoulders when I run...
Also what to wear (typical girl) its been very cold and wet here lately, I get too hot in a hat.... thinking breathable t under light jacket thing...

Thanks

Hello and all the best for the run. 10 miles is a fair distance and looking at the weather, you'll be fine in shorts and a t-shirt. At the start I'd take a couple of black plastic bag and wrap up in them, then discard them just as you are about to start.

Other tips are:
Please don't start too quickly, an evenly run race is best, and if you feel good at 8 miles, then push onwards.
Don't talk during the run, it will save you minutes
Don't constantly look at your watch (every 3 miles will do)
Before the race, drink lots until 30 minutes before then stop drinking, go to the toilet 15 mins before the race and just before you set off, drink about 200ml of water
Eat what you would normally eat before the race
Enjoy the race and celebrate your great achievement afterwards

All the best and post how you got on

Good luck in the race.

Tight/stiff shoulders, upper back and neck are probably caused by you not relaxing your shoulders enough when you run. There can be a number of reasons for this - I get it when I run with a rucksack on my back. Possibly caused by you trying to limit clothing movement. I guess you just need to try to relax your shoulders (easier said than done though). Make sure you aren't hunching at all - I find I sometimes have to deliberately drop my shoulders a bit as I've subconsciously hunched a little.

Don't change your normal pre-run routine coming into the race. A lot of people try something new because it's a "race" not a "run" and end up feeling worse. Make sure you are well hydrated but don't overdo it - you don't want to have to stop mid-race!

Hope it goes well and you enjoy it.
E.

Thanks for replies! All taken on board, I'm hoping for under 2 hours thats my goal, but just finishing will really be excellent.
When I graduated in the summer I couldnt jog around the village, I was so unfit, to achieve this will be fabulous.

wavey Hi Cliff, been a while, hope things are well

Thanks for link UD..

Mostly road from the map and directions, will be a nightmare if windy (Scottish Highlands) gets so strong! Ive done some training on the beach, up and down sand dunes, a killer on the buttocks.
Ive put my name down for a 1/2 marathon in Feb but its going to be freezing by then
