But they have allowed Gareth Southgate to continue without one. Of Course the most Succesful Manager in the Premier league never obtained one but Since his tenure pre-dates it they "gave" him one anyway. It never used to be a requirement and given that the job does not need any technical skills why have it?

So that the FA can be in 'control', and charge for courses, etc?

FA Course fees are pretty insignificant if someone else is paying. A shade under £7,000 for the pro license.

One reason a Pro license is required in the Premiership is because the manager is managing the coaching staff as well as the playing staff. The FA consider it necessary that the manager should have an understanding of what the staff are up to.

Whether it helps keep the chaps at FA HQ in jobs. rolleyes
