POLICE INVESTIGATE BBC OVER 'RACIST' WORLD CUP STUNT
Posted 10/07/06
Police are to investigate claims that BBC's Newsnight programme incited racial hatred by stoking up anti-English behaviour in Scotland during the World Cup.
The programme has been deluged with complaints after buying 'an old banger', decking it out in England flags and dumping it in a notorious Glasgow estate. A hidden camera then filmed youngsters vandalising the car, ripping off the flags and smashing all the windows with bricks.
According to the mediaguardian, 'Fifteen MPs have given cross-party support to an early day motion in Parliament which 'deplores' the Newsnight report and states that 'this was clearly a set-up by the BBC to encourage antisocial behaviour in its endeavour to besmirch the reputation of Scottish sports fans'.'
It's not known how many of the politicians are themselves Scottish.
Strathclyde police have also confirmed that they have received a complaint from a member of the public and are believed to be investigating accusations that the programme incited racial hatred.
On their website 'blog', Newsnight have defended the piece as 'a legitimate exercise to test anti-English feeling in Scotland during the World Cup'.
Viewers, though, seem unimpressed. They have variously described the piece as 'pointless', 'a tabloid stunt', 'par for the course from the BBC these days', 'cheap anti-Scottish publicity', 'xenophobic', 'disgraceful', 'a gross misjudgement', 'an investigation into the bleedin obvious', 'really crap journalism', 'television from the Daily Mail' and complained that similar results would have been achieved if a car had been decked out in Portugal colours and left in any London estate.
Another added that any station which employed Ian Wright as a pundit could never claim the moral highground.

What would have happened if they put a Scottish-liveried banger in a dodgy estate in Manchester, I wonder? Perhaps much the same thing?
I understand the sentiment though; was watching T-in-the-park last night and The Zootons (a scouse band) were doing their set. In between songs they said "any English guys here?" to which the entire crowd boo'd?!?!

I'd hazard a guess and say nothing...
Nope..i'd hazard a guess it would be stolen...bugger all to do with the flags mind you
Look folks, its banter.
I know loads of english people, and its the same all round "I hope you england loose" - "Why's that because you Scots loose at everything" etc etc.
Good natured, as happens all over the land by people from all walks of life who just follow sport in general. (Same type of banter happens between football fans in every country)
Also regarding the car, place any clapped out clown car in a socially dprived area and this will happen.
Using domestic football again, because this is Glasgow and there is the old firm divide, you may actually find out that this car would have probably been percieved as a Rangers supporters car.
It complicated stuff, however basicly the way it works is:
Rangers = British, pro-establishment, Royalty, Red White and Blue Union flags etc.
Celtic = Irish, republicanism, anti-establishment, anti royalty etc
Latterally from this there is a tendancy for a minority of Rangers Fans to buy England shirt to prove how british they are (they tend to forget that Scotland is part of Britain)
Now the area of Glasgow that the car was placed in is the Gallowgate, which is junkie-vile and also classed unofficially as a 'celtic area', it also contains a high number of celtic bars as the stadium is about a mile or so from the Gallowgate
Now harking back to the Old Firm divide, this car may simply be seen as a Rangers Fans car, parked in an area where the person really should have known better (much like wearing a Rangers top and walking into one of the bars mentioned previously).
Also to add - the car was parked in Glasgow and not Aberdeen (an area that seen the most high profile of anti-english behaviour)
Aberdeen is full of backwards folk (more commonly known as the tartan army), and is really the heartland for these nutters in their kilts who seem to appear and bug the rest of Scotland with reminders of William Wallace etc etc.
They also seem to forget that this is 2006, not 1206.....I wonder why the car wasn't parked in Aberdeen??
I believe the Beeb have used the flames of one fire, to try and start another!
