UPDATE 1-Soccer-World-Beckham stands down as England captain
Sun 02 Jul, 11:33 AM
By Trevor Huggins

BADEN BADEN, Germany, July 2 (Reuters) - David Beckham quit on Sunday as England captain after almost six years in the job in the wake of their World Cup quarter-final defeat by Portugal.

The England midfielder, looking on the verge of tears, read out a statement announcing he would step down with the change of manager as Sven-Goran Eriksson hands over to Steve McClaren.

Beckham said former caretaker England manager Peter Taylor had given him "the greatest honour of my career ... and fulfilling my childhood dream" by appointing him as captain in November 2000.

After being captain for 58 of his 95 England caps, Beckham said: "I feel the time is right to pass on the armband.

"As we enter a new era under Steve McClaren, it has been an honour and a privilege to have captained our country and I want to stress that I wish to continue to play for England.

"And I look forward to helping both the new captain and Steve McClaren in any way I can."

Beckham said England's players were all hit hard by Saturday's exit against Portugal after a penalty shootout with their match finishing 0-0 after extra time.

Seems like a sensible decision to me, he has obviously realised that his time of being first name on the teamsheet is over. Gerrard to replace him?

I think so.

I also think it may be dawning on Beckham that his days are numbered.

He's staring @ a bit part in Euro2008 and retirement by 2100 so it was obvious this was going to be his last biggie.

If I was him or Neville G I'd be giving Wazza a duffing up right now.

About time, never had leaderships qualities, being captain helped the FA shift more replica shirts therefore allowing the FA to pay for Sven's wages. Can you honestly imagine him standing in the dressing room commanding the respect of the players and delivering an awe inspiring speech.

Terry or Gerrard for me, real men more concerned with their football than pushing their brand and setting up coaching schools in the U.S.

Beckham has done a John Barnes, he obtained 50 odd caps from one goal against Brazil, Beckham 1 or 2 good performances and that Free Kick against Greece.

I await the flack

Barnes = One wonder goal but otherwise a crap international. Bloody fantastic club player though.

But I don't agree about Beckham. He's been a fading force for a few years now but he used to be a deserved first pick.

Terry is not going to be an automatic starter come the next world cup,his age and performances in this and the last world cup were not good

Gerrard seems the obvious choice

John Terry - 07 December, 1980
Steven Gerrard - 30 May, 1980

I thought SG was a touch younger,he would still be my choice but it could be short term i.e 2 years

When did England captain become a fixed position

Surely it used to be......manager looks round dressing room @ 1445 and say's 'put this on, lad'

Before Bex made it a PR role shirley it was only post match press confs that the capt attended.

It is obvious that the only players of stature with enough gavitas are SG and JT

I bloody hope so. Once a player gets over 100 years old they're usually past their best.

Beckham only seemed to get in the team as Sven worshipped the ground he played on and his reputation was so huge that he "just couldn't be left out." It never mattered how well he was actually playing during the match or his form running up to a game, he was an automatic pick purely based on who he is. He always put in great free kicks and set plays apparently - no he didn't, watch this World Cup and you will see that!
Other managers have the bottle to take off the biggest of big reputation players if they are not playing well or aren't fitting into the system. Scolari has done it more than once with Figo and Parreira has taken off the likes of Kaka and Ronaldo before. Sven would never take off his bosom buddy David now would he!
Good to see the back of Eriksson, his heart was never in it and his tactics were incomprehensible in almost every game! Maybe the desire to build a team around Becks will disappear with the slimy Swede and we will actually use the best players in a formation they can play well in!

Are you sure?

It didn't appear to be a fixture......rather than blindingly obvious.

sorry mate, nothing personal. Actually only reason I noticed myself was because I was reading the posts out loud to a mate.

Was quite upsetting to see him make the announcement - he was obviously bitterly disappointed that they hadn't done better, and in comparison with Sven, who I honestly believe didn't give a stuff how they did as long as he got paid and got his name in the paper, I'll give Beckham credit for that.

Don't know why, but I think Beckham might make a good manager when he's finished playing.
