Just found out the ref for the next England match

Horacio Elizondo, Argentina

Poor sod might be a great ref but he's on a hiding to nothing if we lose

Regardless of the result, FIFA have already cocked up by issuing too many edicts. The standard of refeering has well and truly ruined a great competition!

Nothing to do with the stadard of cheating and almost constant trying to con the ref by diving, shirt pulling, feigning injury, gesticulating for cards to be produced as well as the usual stuff of both sides appealing for throw ins/corners/goal kicks when one of them is obviously lying, stealing yards at throw ins, not retreating ten yards at free kicks and then when you do the free kick taker moves the ball towards the wall an extra yard and starts complaining all over again.

The idea isn't to see how much you can get away with or how far you can go before you're sanctioned...

All the above mentioned could be dealt with by a good ref. They guy who did the Australia v Italy game I thought was very very good, until the penaly. Apart from that decision, he seemed really on top of things, seemed to allow the players to tackle hard (if fair) and punished ridiculous tackles (ie red card). It was a shame he was tricked by the dive, but I think he had 92 good minutes.

Plus Argentina speak Spanish, Argentina have a massive rivalry to Brazil who speak Portugeuse and we're playing the Portuguese. I don't think this referee will be on anyones side.

It was. Can you honestly say that the four players sent off in the Holland Portugal game didn't deserve their cards (maybe not the guy who 'elbowed' Figo, but then again his first card should have been a straight red anyway for that attempt to end the career - and future fatherhood plans - of Ronaldo earlier).

Besides, as I keep saying, wht is so difficult in the players showing a bit of self control. Figo headbutting for instance, and then going down clutching his face and screaming in agony when the guy hardly brushed his face. That is straight up plain and simple cheating - do you think he shows the same reactions in training, or simply has a word with the other guy to watch where he's waving his arms about?

A very strange decision by FIFA I must say. I thought the idea was to keep everything as neutral as possible and hence the only referees left in the tournament at the last 16 would be those from neutral countries?

I mean, if Argentina beat Germany and we get through to the final, we play Argentina in the final?! How can this be right - don't FIFA remember the fight for the Malvinas?

Well according to the BBC website / Sun
Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo, who will officiate England's quarter-final against Portugal, enjoys writing romantic poetry in his spare time. (The Sun)
I used to teach English in Madrid. All the spaniards insisted on calling them Las Malvinas. I would pause the class and harangue them for however long I had left that people had died so that they could remain THE FALKLAND ISLANDS! please if you are British never ever call them any Spanish name, even in jest.

Anyway I do feel for the ref in our match. He'll not get anything right, even if he does.

I always remember the media coverage prior to the conflict. This Newsweek edition being one of the best headlines ever.

Even more people died trying to make them Las Malvinas, so if you are going by bodycount, they should be Las Malvinas. The British seized them by force in 1833 and deported the existing Argentine settlers, so the Argentines have got a point. Give 'em back, I say. Definitely not worth dying over, anyway.

As for the ref, he will be an Argentine national hero if he manages to get England knocked out, no question. They might even name an airport or a small suburb after him.
