Is it my imagination or wasn't France's first goal last ngith miles offside?
Not the score, but the guy on France's left.

I assume they rule she was not interfering with play, but then how do you play the offside trap then....if the ball gets passed to the left then the offside trap line should be 25 meters out, but hang on, if it gets passed to the right it is a differnet player and the offside trap line should be 20 meters out.

That can't work....how can anyone turn round and say the guy wasnt interfering with play when the defenders probably were counting on himn beign offside and playing there lien fo that?

Offside is offside...you can't have degrees or Buts otherwise it becomes open to interpretation and you get mroe mess!

Either that or i imgained the whole thing.

Yep, it was that persistant offender Thierry Henry. He must have been pulled up for it a dozen times last night. Ribery may have got the ball in the end but Henry was definatley offside.
He also dived into the Spanish defender and claimed he was fouled which let to the second French goal.

I did remember seeing one of the spanish players faces when the ball was put through....he looked very confused as if to say......what the f...!

If the goalkeeper or anyone looks for just a second at Henry me must be offside, or even things about his royal arrogant smug impossibly mature facial expressions (sorry he annoys me mroe than any othe rplayer i've seen).

Henry was only offside so much last night because his team mates weren't reading his runs and passing the ball at the right moment. they were waiting way too long. Henry doesn't seem to be getting the service to be as awesome as he usually is with france.

Didnt Henry hold his hands in the air to show the ref he wasnt interfering with play,or so the commentator said

Yep, it confused me a bit too. OK, so they want more goals scored so they've changed the rules, but it does seem to me that there have been numerous other offside calls this WC where the offside player wasn't taking part in the action.

It certainly destabilised the defence last night - they lost a second before pursuing Ribery because they were expecting the whistle. That's sort of their own fault as they're professionals and should know the rules, but it's going to become a new red herring tactic now I reckon.

So...afetr Henry waves his hands int he air to say i'm nto interfering...

The defenders then think ....bugger...we shoudl all be 5 years in that direction! Oooppps....too late.

Doesn't work in my opinion.
I don't profess to know what the defenders were thinking or whether they had seen or thought abotu henry....and nor can the ref or linesmen.

If the defnders at considere dhim a few seconds before the ball was played then he would still be interfering. We would just not have seen it as evidently.

Good point.

New tactic...send someone to run down the left...the defnce plays for him to be offside.
He turns round...starts to run back...defenders relax a bit.
Meanwhile you pl;ay the ball through to someone else in the sligtht confusion.

Note to Ericson....

Yep...a typical game.....

Hystrionics from players
At least one player (on french side) indicating to ref to show a card to another player

Strange offsides

Abotu par for the course for this world cup

Just one?! I saw almost everyone asking for cards, Viera being the most obvious. Ruud Gullit said that the entire French Bench jumped up shouting for a card for Puyol.

It's discuting behaviour.
Yep it was Viera i saw aswell.

Why isn't that an automatic car din itself?
There are 8 quaters to eb played...so 8 refs......so 8 phone calls to say...if a player asks for a card give it to HIM!
Then 8 more phonecalls to the teams.

Then we'd never see that behavious again inbt he competition.

16 phonecalls. About a tenner at most.

Yes...a card for players who ask for cards for other players..

Just an example of how easy it shoudl be to eradicate unsavoury aspects of the game.

I just don't quite understand what fifa do most of the time.
How difficult can it be?
There 4 officials....umpteen cameras....and 10's of millions of people watching.
How can a player get away with anything?
It shoudl be the cleanest sport int he world at this level.

henry = dirty, robbin' bastard!

nice to see that generally across the whole of this years world cup there has been cheatin' at a whole new level, which shows that the players really have very little respect for the game as a whole if they deem that to be acceptable.

goes back to ref though - nobody is punished so they just try and get away with as much as possible. Figo's headbutt the other night gets a yellow? shurely shome mishtake as thats an instant red in the rule book.

now i played pub level rugby for many years and yes its more violent generally but you know what, we had more respect for the other players and the referee than anyone i've ever seen in football. try mouting off at a rugby ref - you'll be on the side line warming the sin bin quicker than Henry can dive to floor feigning a pole-axing.
