Looks like a 4-1-4-1 with Carrick just behind the middle 4 and Hargreaves at right back with Ferdinand coming back in.
Carrick is behind Beckham-Gerrard-Lampard-Cole and looks like playing a holding role to allow Gerrard and Lampard to push forward, ide like to see Lennon have a go in Beckhams position late on.
Is Sven asking too much of Rooney to be up front on his own just back from injury?

Panic? Don't think so. Sven tends to fold to pressure eventually - usually months after everything's died down, so that he appears to have thought of the solution outside of any public or media influence. This is the best formation for the current England side, especially with the dearth of strikers.
4-1-4-1 allows a strong defence and a midfield that can build and go forward into what will essentially be a 4-3-3, with Cole on the left and either Lampard or Gerrard up with Rooney in the centre. When Lennon comes on, then it's a true 4-3-3 with a CF and two wingers, and with the midfield's passing ability, that should be lethal.
The holding midfield role is an absolute must with the type of players we've got, and Carrick is the best equipped to fulfill that role. (Alternatives are Hargreaves, Carragher and Ferdinand, but Carrick is the most orthodox choice.)
It also allows for a Plan B, taking out the holding midfielder or one of the full backs and introducing Crouch, and even a Plan C where Walcott and Lennon inject the kind of pace that can destroy the opposition in the last half hour of a game at the expense of one of the midfielders, or even Rooney himself.
Of course, having written all these positive things, watch us get torn apart by Ecuador. But at least Sven's finally got some decent ideas.
