has any team in the history of the world cup lost a first round match and then gone on to win that same years competition?

Probably.

England drew nil nil with Uraguay in 1966.

Denmark drew nil nil with England first game of Euro 92 & went on to win. (And there were only there because Yugoslavia were otherwise occupied)

west germany lost their last group game to east germany in 74 and went on to win
italy drew all three 1st round games (peru, poland and cameroon) in 1982 and went on to win
