Following the conclusion of Paris 2024, I thought it would be worthwhile starting an athletics thread as I couldn't see anything alread for those people who keep an eye on throughout the year.

Seems Mondo is now doing side quests - https://www.diamondleague.com/news/general/duplant... Mondo Duplantis and Karsten Warholm, pole vault and 400m hurdle world-record holders, to race over 100m

I'll be interested to see if Keely H tries for the 800m WR. It will be tough but she is in as good shape as she has ever been. Look at pictures of her now against 2021, she's a much tougher cookie. But there is still nearly a second and a half to go
Sadly for her her 2 main rivals are either away with the fairies and not really interested (AM) or just not in the shape they were last year (MM). KH winning time was slower than the last Olympics or the world champs last year.
She needs Jemma Reekie to push her and Jemma needs something to retrieve this year as despite moving to 22nd on the all time list she won't be pleased with this year.
Add in Duguma and maybe Georgia Bell and it will be quite a spectacle.

I'm not sure just what the US track team did but they peaked for the games perfectly. They won a medal (or more) in every mens track race except the 800m where Bryce Hoppel ran a US record for 4th. They won the 1500 where they really weren't expected too, same for the 400.
All credit to them and I'd love to know what they did.

I was just thinking this after the Olympics - Athletics meets were always on terrestial TV in the 80s-90s and a bit of a fanfare when Coe, Cram or Ovett were running.

Bislett Games with the Dream Mile was a season's highlight.

I probably don't watch anymore because it's buried behind a paywall or some obscure channel somewhere so have no visibility of what's on when - shame really.

The BBC usually sow the Diamond League stuff. It might be on a red button channel but it is there.

Ah….thanks for that, I couldn’t have been more wrong in my broadcasting assessment! Will keep my eyes open for it.

That's a shame, I had thought with good pacing and the right attitude she could certainly improve on her July time if not actually threaten the WR. Momentum is a vital thing so off the back of the last few months she had a chance. But another good winter and she will try again I'm sure.

Mondo Duplantis is just playing the game though - chipping 1cm off each time and milking the headlines and $s. Having said that - he could vault over my house which is mighty impressive :-)

I enjoyed the fact that 2 other vaulters celebrated that they got over 6 metres. Whilst they might be competing for second it's great if they still enjoy putting in good performances.
