Paris 2024 Olympics
Discussion
I hope people don't think it's too early for a thread. I must admit it's athletics that's got me excited today but between now and then, I'm sure I'll look forward to all sorts of other things as well.
Today in the Paris Diamond League event, Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine) broke a 37-year world record in the women’s high jump, Laura Muir set a new British 1500m mark in a race where Faith Kipyegon broke the world record and Armand Duplantis was pretty close to the world record in the pole vault. All very exiting for me.
And I have high hopes of Matt Hudson-Smith who is performing well at 400m and even won a good 200m race the other week.
Are others already getting ready to watch?

Anyone who is going, might want to boycott the Dutch volleyball team.

Well done for highlighting that, it saves me from doing so. It is an absolute disgrace, he should still be in prison.https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/articles/c511yz5ze18o

We have tickets for the weightlifting (family member competes but not at this level)
Anyone else travelling for the games?
It's going to be all TV for me but perhaps I'm missing an opportunity since it's so close. Have always loved the weightlifting. Never give it that much thought as a sport normally but at Olympic level it suddenly becomes a favourite of mine.Anyone else travelling for the games?

We've got tickets for hockey & water polo. Slightly random choice but we watched hockey at the Commonwealth's in Birmingham, so went for it again. Never watched water polo before but I'm told it can be quite aggressive.Anyone else travelling for the games?
Hockey tickets were 35 euro pp for category C seats, water polo was 70 euro pp but cat A. In my ticket ballet slot there were some gymnastics but they were 690 euro each. That might have been for good seats though.
Once we're done in Paris, we're off to Normandy. Looking forward to going to an Olympics for the first time.

A friend of Mrs Harpoon is a big hockey fan and player - she got some tickets for the semi finals only yesterday. They fly in one morning, match in the afternoon, match the next morning and leave that night. Worth having a look at availability if you are still thinking about it.mikef said:

I do love the Olympics, turning on the TV at any time and there's some sports on - and the opportunity to watch some obscure sports is also good fun.
Exactly the same here. Also the slightly bizarre concept of feeling the buzz of something very special happening, even when I'm sat in my office or lounge watching it.Looking forward to the opening ceremony too.
Some more good athletics yesterday at the London Diamond League event. Great performances and British records from Keely Hodgkinson (800m) and Matt Hudson Smith in the 400m. MHS looked like he was slowing slightly at the end of his race but he did finish in 43.74 secs so I'll forgive him that. And 22 year old Louis Hinchcliffe in the 100 metres is someone that's new to me. Coached in the US by Carl Lewis at the University of Houston. Noah Lyles (US) won that race though.
Sis and BiL have tickets at 30E for one of the group football games in Bordeaux. Had 2 for myself and wife, but in the end it would cost £1k in total for the week with all the logistics factored in. As we are going on an expensive hol in Sept and it’s also tax month in July, I declined. Oh yeah and my wife really doesn’t like football much!
