My daughter recently had a go at firing a few arrows at a straw bale. She is coming up 8 and would like a bow and arrow for her birthday. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience they can share in relation to makes, products etc? It is quite hard to search online when you aren't really sure what you are looking or asking for in the first place. We have a few gun and country shops not far away but not sure if they sell them or not.

Thanks!

Get in touch with a local archery club.

They should run 'have-a-go' sessions or even a proper multi session beginners course. Maybe get her (and you) a beginners course for her birthday. I would think that 8 is probably the youngest they would take somebody and even then it could be more down to the size of the child more than the actual age.

Archery GB site has a list of all the affiliated clubs https://archerygb.org/clubs/find-a-club

Many things to take into account when choosing bows. Height, arm length, dominant eye etc.

Clubs have coaches who know what's needed and also the equipment that you should be able to try. Plus they may have members/ex members that may have equipment for sale

Thanks Russ, good idea will have a look into this. You're right so many considerations I suppose. She is big for her age so probably able to do it.

My daughter got a bow at 8. You could go to a club, take into consideration all the various factors as above, or you could do what we did and just buy one, and let your little Artemis start flinging arrows at stuff in the garden. It's not rocket science, and sometimes sub-optimal is ok. Just let them have fun. If she decides it is something she wants to dedicate serious time to then maybe a club later.

Decathalon had some semi serious ones a few year ago. We bought one during Covid to play with in garden.
