Sand ones work well unless you kick them hard. If you kick them then they may move around depending in the number of companies you're a director of.
Cheers. It's just for punching. Argos and Decathlon seem to have ones that come with a frame to hang a bag from. I'm getting the impression they're better than the ones which have a base.Slowboathome said:

Having one swing wild will train your targeting as well as your agility if you try to not let it hit you. On the other hand, you might want to punch really heavily which will send the bag swinging up to hit the ceiling or whatever is behind the bag!

Unless you put a lot of very heavy stuff in the hanging ones and they're chained to the ground, they will move a lot. Light ones without a tether will swing like they're in a gale-force wind!

Thanks - this is helpful. Basically I want to beat the crap out of something on a regular basis, and it would be better if that 'something' were a punchbag in my garage. Maybe a fast-paced technical workout will do the job as well as simply biffing a bag as hard as I can.I guess it depends on your application. I'll have a wander down to the local Decathlon and see what's what.

You might find slam balls useful. You pick it up and smash it down into the ground (preferably on concrete or grass!) going as hard as you like.

Just to close this off, I ended up buying a free-standing Everlast bag. Have found some boxing-based workouts on Youtube. Seems to be doing the trick.
Thanks for the various suggestions.

Sand will be heavier than water if you find it's moving about.
I'd also try putting it on rubber matting to add friction. If it's in the garage on a concrete base, putting something on the concrete will stop the base wearing out!
