Just seen a player warned that if he doesn't hit a red he'll lose the frame. Something to do with reds being available on both sides of the black. Can anyone explain?

Dave.

Hmm, maybe it's this bit:

'If a player fouls and misses in a non-snookered scenario, and if the opponent requests that the shot be replayed from the original position, a second failure to make a best attempt is ruled a foul and a miss regardless of the score difference. The fouling player is issued a warning by the referee, and a third such failure forfeits the frame to the opponent.'

I thought repeated fouls or misses just kept racking up the other player's score.

This is right. If you're not snookered you have three attempts before forfeiting the frame.

It’s to stop a player continually trying to hit a snookered ball (one that won’t result in giving the opponent an advantage/easy next shot) rather than plying a sighted ball which would be more likely to leave the opponent a good next shot.

That makes sense, though every time he misses he'll give points to his opponent, which will eventually lose him the frame anyway. I guess the '3 goes' rule saves time though.

I think that at the top level it's obvious that the players can get out of pretty much any situation and the 4 point penalty means sod-all to them.
