Couldn't see a thread dedicated to table tennis so thought i'd start one. Always enjoyed a game of tt when I was younger but hadn't played it for decades. We had to move out of our house for 3 months to have some work done and the house we've rented has a table in the basement. My kids are too young to play the game with (5 and 2) so I found a coach through a website who is fantastic (plays semi-professionally and is an excellent teacher). I'm now really getting into it. It's such an unbelievably fun, challenging and easy-yet-difficult sport that is a great workout for the body and the brain with no risk of injury other than hurt pride. One of the few sports where a 70yr old can beat a 20yr old or a 10yr old can beat a 30yr old.
Anyone else into a bit of recreational table tennis?

I used to play a lot as a kid - member of the small local youth club, and consistent 2nd placed finalist in the club competitions we held. (There was one kid who was consistently just a bit better than me.... )Anyone else into a bit of recreational table tennis?
Would love to get a table and stick it in the garage. Unfortunately I think it's a non-starter, as I'd have to find somewhere else to keep the canoes, kayaks, bikes, scooters, ladders, toolkits, train set, scalextric etc etc.
Would be nice though.
My eldest (9, nearly 10) loves it - they have tables at school that he can play on during breaks.
We have a clip on net that we attach to the dining table and play on that indoors - also a lot of fun. Though he was a bit miffed that his fat old dad can beat him (and his grandparents - who he thought he would thrash. So the 70yr old v 10yr old comment is spot on ). He beats his mum though (we have a "no letting the kids win" rule here. It occasionally gets a bit like the water polo in Meet the Fokkers...but good fun and I doubt it'll scar them for life in a bad way!).
We're just about to acquire an outdoor table. Not entirely convinced it's a great idea due to wind (of the weather variety)....but we'll see.

I used to play a bit at school but hadnt played in years until last year when we visited friends with a table. Interest re-ignited!
The next problem was decision paralysis - there's so many options for tables, i just dont know what i'd need. And of course the kids would feign interest and never play again (like the trampoline we bought them).
Would love to know if anyones got any recommendations for tables/ suppliers?
Like most things its possible to spend £££ but i'd rather spend £ or ££!

Glad I'm not alone! I'll ask the guy who's coaching me for table recommendations (sadly I don't think I'll have room for one in my house once we move back in so not something i've considered). What I will say is that the when he brought along new balls and a couple of decent bats as opposed to using the ones that were lying around, which we had done for a few sessions, the difference was unbelievable. The bats looked identical to the cheapo ones but the way you could spin the ball was night and day. I think we're talking £70 vs a tenner so not mega money but the bats and decent, new balls makes a huge difference.

We had one. It was pretty pointless, the SLIGHTEST breeze and the ball moves around too much. You need a big double garage really. We sold ours after a year or so, it was like new.Frimley111R said:

That was a good 8 years ago now I think.
I still enjoy it now, but now we are limited to Table Tennis on the Wii with my 7 year old.
I do have a table that me and my Dad built when I was 11. Its certainly slower than a normal table, but would do the job if I could be bothered to set it up. Its very heavy though and not exactly easy to move.

Our local council turned an empty Currys store in the shopping centre into 'Ping Pong Parlour' with 4 tables, bats and balls and that has been very popular. Although I hate the term 'Ping Pong'!We have bought an outside table recently from Decathlon. PPT 500 Pongori.
So far its been used inside and me and my son (11) play almost every day, we love it! It will go outside in the summer, as the Mrs is a bit upset with it taking up the new extension, but not sure if we will play it as much as its so convenient inside.

I think I am like a few on here. Played it like mad when I was younger (early to mid 1980s) then played it in the early 90s but I was rubbish and I found it fun but very frustrating too. When I played originally the wrist was used a lot (no sniggering!) but it seemed to move more towards the elbow and I never quite worked out which one to use.
Every so often I think of joining a local club but never do. I think that finding a coach could be a good idea.
