"Polish FA president, Cezary Kulesza, said on Twitter: "No more words, time to act! Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia.""

OK so this is understandable, though I don't see any support for the war from Russian civilians? you can't really punish a country by not letting them play football?

Because the footballer and their fans are not army officials... It doesn't hurt the country's finances or resources.

39 but what is your point? My point is that it isn't going to be an effective way to punish Russia and I'll doubt the Russian players are backing the war either. Its just going to upset the dedicated sports players.

With respect that's a pretty naive point of view. Coverage of the Ukraine invasion is spun very differently by the Russian government to the reality we see in the west. To a large extent Putin's actions are being driven by ego and how he wants to be seen by Russians. It is vitally important that the rest of the world shows its disgust and condemnation by every available means to deny him his propaganda victory. If that means kicking Russia out of everything from the World Cup to Eurovision, so be it. If they don't like it, maybe they should consider regime change.

Easier said than done. The people who care are powerless and the people with power don't care.

Russia and its people need to understand just how isolated they are by their Dictators murderous quest - they should be withdrawn from all International Sporting events until all Russian troops are withdrawn from Ukraine.

No, but if every Russian Football fan is persuaded to say "fk Putin, he's stopping us winning the world cup" then this is the start of mass dessention by the Russian people, and it might result in Putin getting his arse kicked by his own people.

Not just sporting events, they’ve also been banned from the Eurovision Song Contest. laugh

On a more serious note Russia should be banned from just about everything until their troops leave Ukraine.

Go on then, how is the western media spinning this? My Ukrainian AND Russian friends don't see any spin. What secret info do you have?

Can't blame it being called off. Just seen shreeves asking Guardiola his thoughts and feelings on it. I mean, why is he asking? What does peps opinion matter and why have him have to make a statement on it. Same way they were asked about covid protocols.

Sport is sport. It's the most important of the least important things.

In terms of sending a message to Russia, firstly I doubt Putin gives a st, but it should have been FIFA but then they are probably still spending the money from the Russian world cup.

Back on topic, Poland are free to make this gesture but I don't think it will achieve much.

I disagree, it will only be the footballers, the football fans and the marketing entourage that has spent millions on marketing through them that will be annoyed.

Just look at Djokovic the tennis player, he doesn't get to go to play in the Australian Open, that was a downright fascist scenario to deny him playing tennis - A NON-CONTACT SPORT - unless he injects himself with some vaccine & chemicals... So the fans were disappointed and now we have a fake winner. This did not result in regime change.

A fake winner? rather disrespectful to the guy that won and the other 127 in the draw.
Russia (well Putin) will be defeated in no small part by showing their citizens that Putin as turned them into a pariah state. Exclusion from all sport and culture is a free and easy way for the rest of the world to do that.
